Looking forward to reading about this. My car has started doing exactly this recently, only it sounds like an old sping bed creaking. Not much of a sailor I'm afraid.

the most likely cause (pls pls let it be this) is apparently the top of the front suspension mounts/struts ...

what complicates it for me (and makes me think it is not this) is that it seems to be temperature related...

I plan to take it in after the 4th holiday to diagnose, I will post the outcome here!!!

+1 on the old bedsprings ...

at my favorite shop Sharkwerks getting my replacement HRE CL40 that I flatspotted at Laguns Seca ... Oops ... note to self, avoid the big red "bag of concrete" berms on the inside of T4 in future!

It appears as though the steering noise is caused by "play" in the steering rack/inner tie rod ends... there is another car (not GT3) here that displays the same issue ... also seems heat/time related as it was not present when I left home, and 1 hour later, there it is ...

simple test, with the car parked turn the wheel slowly, and less than 5 degrees, there should be a small amount of play in the wheel before the rack engages, and there will be an associated creak/clunk ...

we are changing these out now ... will report back if this resolves it...

Thanks Larry. Should there be play so quickly? Also not ideal for the alignment, or is it only play at maximum turn?

apparently a known issue with these components, play is present across the entire range of steering ... will report back after I drive home...

[UPDATE] waiting for parts to install ...

No worries. It's mine. The rack/links 'issue' is one of the things Alex has been working on for me.

that jet engine he has strapped to the roof is amazing ... think you might have to work on the aero though!

I have a weird creeking sound as well that happens randomly. Can we meet up sometime soon and you can listen to it and let me know if its the same as you are experiencing?

it appears that the source is coming from my RSS bump steer kit, the ball sockets are tight, and as a result it requires a little force to break the friction between the ball and its teflon liner, so the effect is that there is a little initial 'play' as the ball starts to move, then when the force overcomes the friction then there is a 'breaking' effect that results in the click ...

I guess I just need to wear them out some ... checked the tie rod ends and other steering components and all are good.

not sure this explains some of the other owners experiences ... sorry!

Thanks for the good investigative work Larry. Doesn't apply to me, but I get the idea, and it may be similar... although it has gone quiet now???

Quick update: Found the source of mine.

Was under the car doing the nuts and bolts, and it turns out that the creakiness was/is coming from the sway bar drop links. Similar to what Larry describes above, but just from a different spot. I put a wrench on the them to turn them from stop to stop on the ***** and there it was, squeak-squeak.
