I couldent agree more Pete , coming out of a viper to a TT .. The Turbo is too soft of a car , unless modded to death.. IMHO
The GT2 is the car for you , much more freindly for a DD than the GT3 (lots of torque) and faster...

Get a 996TT then with the $ saved from not buying a newer car, you can buy a tow vehicle, trailer and Spec Boxster! No car perfectly combines track and street so you have to get 2 cars!

OP said track wasn't a priority and his Viper was too uncomfortable for him on the street. How is the right choice anything other than a Turbo?

In my view, it's the one total skip in the lot—unless the buyer is willing to do major chassis upgrades. The brilliant Werks/Champion K1 had something like $15k in suspension work...and I think that was before wheels and tires. Oh, and you gotta delete the cats ( ) or turbos ($$$) to ditch the VTG lag!

I have a 997.1 TT and love it. Suspension feels just fine cruising on 7 hour drives and going through twisty roads. Love the kick of the Turbo.
I also have a GT3 RS. Great for the track obviously and love it on a twisty road. The sport buckets are very comfy, for me, on the highway.
But if used exclusively for the street, I love the Turbo.

So, a perfect move for OP from Viper: Comfortable, insanely fast, and utterly refined. One of those 911s that's so good it takes a little longer before just how good it is really sets in.

I dunno, even if I never went to a race track again, I think I would pick a 996 GT3, 2009 GT2, or RS 4.0 so long as I could get some back seats into it. I'll take the compromises in exchange for the dynamics, even for street-only. But it sounds like OP would be happier a 996 Turbo, 997-2 Turbo, or 2008-2009 GT2. Or not. Car choices are a mighty complex thing.
Ah, but you have the "guilty pleasure" Cabrio—the one 997 that caught me totally off guard for being so much better than its coupe counterpart. I remember writing that story, and trying to figure out why its chassis was so much nicer and more fun to drive in than the coupe. Reason, as it turned out, was less chassis rigidity. It was a very nice car, so nice I could deal with the VTG lag. Totally forgot about this. If OP wants a Cab, I agree with you.

I hope you mean 997-2 Turbo. Because, in the case of the 997-1 Turbo, soft is AWFUL on the street. Against the rest of these, its chassis is a mess.

but after a 2001 viper, id say a 996 turbo would feel awesome.

Being single, cab was and is important for visibility and being visible...Also--and I'm from the midwest--the breath of fresh air you get once the Turbo kicks in as you drive through a forest road is just amazing. Smell of freedom.
I really think it handles great. I tracked it for 2 years. I never knew why everyone sat in the pits when it rained. I was the only one out there and it pulled out of every corner. So good.
Now with the GT3 I realize how good the 4WD can be!
