It's isn't popular, but I did proper break-ins on both new RS's. The second time I got smart and drove it to VIR, which with a round trip got me the mileage that I needed. It probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference. But, dealer knows I do it and buyers as well. Gives buyers a little piece of mind and the dealer always back what I tell him if something is wrong. Just my opinion...grain of salt.

I had the privilege of meeting Andreas Preuninger for the 4.0 litre launch in the UK. His advice on running in was as follows - vary engine speed and load for first 800 miles or so, and then use it as its maker intended. Always respect warm up period for the engine.
He noted that of all the cars Porsche run most, if not all, showed significant HP gains at between 10 and 15 thousand miles. The 4.0 litre test car was dyno'd at over 510PS at 10,000 miles!
As ever, Porsche are very conservative with their HP figures.
Anyhow, similar advice on running in to many as per above. Certainly do not worry about following the over cautious words in the handbook. (Remember the CGT running in advice? it was 3,000 miles per US handbooks and 1,800 miles in the UK. I think the advice was more to give the drivers time to get used to the power!)
Cheers

Derek, yes, I changed the oil filter, engine oil, trans oil (all musts IMO) and went to SRF (optional) and I was done!
Please note, the 4000 rpm limit seems to be a US thing in the break in procedure. Our break in procedure asks for varied rpms, keep 'em low till the engine is fully warmed, no extreme braking and no full throttle acceleration...
Apologies for late reply!

DRPM, take a look at Clifton's post #12. Here's good proof to do the early oil change. You might consider doing a UOA on your engine oil and gear lube.
