Intermittent 1-2 shift grind at cold start

Just so I'm clear since this thread will come up with a word search on "grind", it makes an unpleasant metal on metal noise and you can feel the noise via vibration through the shifter. As soon as I hear the noise, I push the clutch pedal, put the shifter in neutral, release the clutch, push the clutch again and and re-attempt to slot it into 2nd with no issues from thereon.
