Disaster

Wooo That looks just like my engine!!! It happened last May. The way you discribe it happening is also so similar. Didn't notice anything until I saw the smoke in the rear view mirror. Not a good day. Put the car into storage for the last few months as cash flow was tight and my job at the time wasn't too secure. Things are now on the Up so car is coming out of storage tomorrow to start stripping down to see whats gone wrong. At the time of failure the car (2007 GT3) had covered 40k miles doing about 5 TDs a year. I'm second owner have owned the car for 3 years, bought with 14k on clock. At the last service Jan that year the car had never been over revved in any band. Feel for you mate, I was gutted at the time, but now looking forward to rebuild.

Always hate to see carnage like that (porsche or otherwise). Best of luck sorting it out.
To those mentioning 'Good Will'... from what I was told warranty expirey + 3 mo is generally what you get for goodwill. I just had ~$5000 of 'good will' done on my 08 3 months post warranty. (nothing remotely close to this however).

Russo, I wish you good fortune with your Porsche dealings on this matter. Not to introduce bathroom humor, but 10 years ago a $0.50 piece of soft plastic that held the ball float on our 2nd floor toilet snapped while we were on spring break vacation, causing a $250,000 water damage homeowners claim. Or, consider the rubber o-ring failure on the shuttle back in the 1980s. Regardless of the specific cause of your engine failure, NorthVan makes a valid point. Good luck with matters.

from engineering standpoint alone it is quite a BS when rod comes out to see sunlight like this and when we call it 'nobody`s fault'... it is a ****ty engine design, no matter how one wants mask it. still, what can you do. **** happens.
i wonder - with damage like this, is there anything left salvagable? is core still consdered good or is it a total waste?

I agree that it sucks for the OP to have a situation where it is nobody's fault, but the reality is, that in this case it is.

i prefer for now to keep telling myself that $12K m96 engine replacement is better than $40K mezger and keep preparing my wife into way of mind that a new engine is something inevitable that comes with a porsche. that makes her hate those cars very much as she keeps driving lexus and in her opinion any car is just like a wardrobe - you buy it and just drive it, like, forever.

our wives must be sisters! I know keep my wife in the cars that are boring to drive, but super reliable. I agree with your mechanic, when driven hard, the life expectancy is reduced, and a replacement is the only way. If my engine were to go, I would find a good used engine, there are lots of them out there, for less money then $40K
