Steve McQueen's '70 911 S Sells for $1.375 Million
A Porsche once owned by Hollywood legend Steve McQueen has been sold for a record-breaking $1.375 million.
The slate grey 1970 911 S was owned by the star during the filming of the movie "Le Mans," in which he plays a racing driver competing in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans event. The car appears in the prologue of the film being driven through the French countryside by McQueen.
According to RM Auctions, who handled the sale at its Monterey, California event on August 19th, it was the highest price ever paid for a Porsche 911. Similar cars without the celebrity pedigree typically trade in the $50,000 range.
Nevertheless, it was far from a record for a car from the noted automobile enthusiast's extensive stable. In 2007, an ex-McQueen 1963 Ferrari 250 was sold for $2.3 million, nearly five times the amount of what similar cars were going for at the time.

Three Wheelin'
The funny thing is...
When she arrives home, I think that I am going to track her....
That's what Steve would have wanted....

1972 - 911s - targa - matching #'s car. $70k asking.
This one is a targa, but I don't think that is a big factor in the price.

Steve McQueen is probably the singular reason that I am so in to Porsche today. "LeMans" had such a huge impact on me those oh so many years ago.

I have a nice memory of that car from just a couple of years ago. I was up instructing with NNJR at Lime Rock on a picture perfect April day... 68 degrees with light breeze and not one cloud... sitting at one of those picnic tables with some buddies and one of them says, "you think that's the McQueen car over there with the Le Mans plate?" Two tables over we hear a small voice say, "sure is, would you like to take a closer look?" The gentleman had all sorts of paraphernalia with him on the car and of course, we all were just sort of amazed to be around the car so nonchalantly at such a cool old race track... great memory.

I was at the auction Friday night. Beautiful car, but a ridiculous price, especially considering it appears that the car was really only purchased out of convenience for filming Le Mans (rather than shipping McQueen's nearly identical 1969 to Europe and back). While McQueen was the original owner of the 1970, he sold it in 1971 after it arrived in the US after the film shoot. He kept the 1969.
Interestingly, Carroll Shelby's personal 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible, being sold by Shelby himself - who was also in the room - didn't seem to sell at a premium on Friday night.
