I've been hearing all the issues re: Cl wheels on the RS for a while now and had to wonder whether my system is at risk or I'm just lucky.

I've run 9ff CL on my 2001 996TT since 2005 with no issues (plenty of track time btw). It seems to be a rip of the cup car system adapted to street cars.

I'm actually wondering whether to go back to 5-lug wheels or stay in the CL world. If someone could point out what the issue with a cup car system on a street car, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

oh yeah, they look like this.

Nothing wrong with the cup system at all. Just that DOT won't give it legal blessings on the grounds that it's not tamper-proof. [insert jerk off picture here]

BUT: the DOT will bless a CL system that 99% don't know how to properly operate and has a non-trivial probability of f_king up big time when the owners can least afford so.

CRex = how was the CGT DOT approved? Ins't it a similar set up as the cup?

The cup CL nut has a hex mating area so theoretically anyone with a big wrench and loosen it. The retaining mechanism is also just a safety pin through the spindle--designed to be easily removed.

The CGT nuts are what we know them to be--dogged little things that require a special tool to mate. The retaining mechanism is also more intricate with spring-loaded splines built into the spindle interlocking with the CL nut. I guess that makes somebody at the DOT think they're temper-proof LOL

The latest 991 cup car seems to be getting a CGT like set up but previous cup car setups for 997s are as Crex described, a big nut screwed onto a thick threaded stub axle.

Thanks! Seems to me that Porsche should have used the same technology for the GT3. Can costs be that much higher?

Good question but they must be because they went to the trouble of re-inventing the wheel, so to speak... Shame they gave it the ability to remove itself whenever it likes too...
