Default towing vehicle

Since more people tow on this forum then others I ask the question, what is your tow vehicle?

Reason for the question is I am towing a trailex enclosed sports car trailer with my 2011 Cayenne S. The Cayenne pulls the trailer with no sweat and I'm getting around 13 MPG with the trailer loaded BUT the rear visibility sucks with the standard outside mirrors and Porsche did such a great job in making them aerodynamic that none of the strap on towing mirrors will stay on. I posted several weeks ago pictures of the small add on mirrors I have taped on with painters tape and double sided badge tape. They are fair at best and that is a stretch. Almost ready to trade the pepper for an F250 just to see (probably not the best idea financially, but did I say the mirrors suck.

By the way the pepper pulls great and is very quiet and comfortable on the road.

So what do you tow and enclosed trailer with? ..... and the Trailex tows great and is a fantastic trailer

look for a 2003-2006 dodge ram regular cab diesel pick up. 2x4 or 4x4 depending where you live.

For approx $15000.00 you can have a year round work truck.

I recently bought 2004 Express cargo van (1500 chassis but with 5.3L V8). Van in near perfect condition, 36,000 miles, paid under 10K. I went this option so I can put a motorcycle inside. When not going to the track I can use it for camping trips with GF and dogs, and save money by sleeping in it for track day outings.

I have a choice of 3.

2002 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 Regular Cab Longbox Duramax Diesel
2008 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 Crew Cab Short box Duramax Diesel
2008 GMC 3500 HD 4x4 Crew Cab Longbox Duramax Diesel Dually

Then again I own a trailer shop and our trucks are overkill for your Trailex.

The dually would come in handy if you thought about upgrading to a 48' gooseneck.

2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab. Couldn't resist the employee pricing. Bought it for the wife actually; she said she preferred a pickup to a SUV... as long as it had 4 doors to load people and stuff.

Got to say, I love it. The open Trailex pulls like a dream, but I know what you mean about the mirrors; I can see through the open trailer but would have an issue with an enclosed.

Before I got the enclosed Trailex, I had an open 8045 and the mirrors were not an issue as like you said you can see through the trailer. Different with the "big box" Other than the mirrors the 2011 Cayenne is fantastic and really I can't complain about 13+ mpg towing. With no trailer I get over 24 mpg on the highway.

Plan to have a discussion with Porsche AG people at Parade. They advertise the Cayenne as a great tow vehicle so they need to address the mirrors. Simple slide out mount would retain the sleek appearance when not towing and give you that extra several inches when towing. By the way I previously had an '08 Cayenne and the shape of the mirrors was better than the new ones, about the only thing that was better.

This is such a great and mostly overlooked option. People have no idea how great they go down the road with a car on a trailer. And for the money -- buy one just for towing to the track.

Towed a 22' ATC V-nosed aluminum trailer with my previous '04 Cayenne S with PASM which I considered mandatory for towing. It did a great job as well except I had the same mirror issues. I could have had a cop behind me for 200 miles and wouldn't have known it!! I couldn't find anything that worked either and I tried several. (People would see the set-up in the paddock and be surprised the pepper would pull that. Just shifted manually and it did well once I worked out the lighting issues- kept throwing a code because the trailer had too many running lights. Lots of old threads about that on the Cayenne forum!)
Now have a '10 F-150 with the trailer package and NO issues. The AC seats are nice on a warm day too!!!

I tow an enclosed trailex with a 2009 Cayenne turbo S....best tow vehicle ever IMO. mileage is no different than the guys with diesel trucks and I have more torque and a much much more fun vehicle to drive. mirrors and visibility are adequate that I have not needed to use mirror extenders for 2 years now.
