the deal with the cayman r is that is a half-way house into gt3 ownership. porsche wants to welcome these customers into the fold. by getting it reviewed and compared to the 'icon' and, by coming close, is-good-enough is the marketing line they want, to hook these would-be porsche buyers who don't wanna buy a base carrera, and can't, as of yet, stretch to a brand-new gt3.

gt3 costs $300k here. rs is $390k. i, for one, can't afford to buy one brand new.
cayman r is $170k. still very exxy, but, big difference. the spyder and cayman r are, imo, the first models which contain a bit of excitement and jazz which appeals to the person who likes the gt models. it is an entry point that is more accessible. and it will be a great drive, it's not hugely watered-down, so everybody is a winner.

Why oh why would you not use a SPEC tire for both of the cars. Run them on Michelins or run them on Bridgestones, but atleast put them under the same rubbber. This is always an issue when car companies try and beat the "RING" record.

Why test the Cayman R with an automatic?
The test was skewed to "protect" the 911 market. Could you imagine the fallout if a "cheaper" model beat out the flagship?
I never did like C&D. I am more of a R&T, Autoweek reader.

C&D and R&T have both been 1-crap reads for the last 15 years. But actually this article is pretty good... Worth the newsstand price I paid anyway.
For me, cayman's handling was almost too good. The 911's im-balance has real charm.

Move. Now before it is too late.
With the rest of the money you open an Aussie Jimmie bar and fly in a cook so you still have home cooked meals. I'll help out at the bar free of charge.

After having my ego ripped out of my chest, when not one, but two or three Caymans passed me at Buttonwillow a couple of weeks back, I can tell you that these cars are seriously fast.
And... that I need to man up and learn how to push the right pedal a little harder. LOL

I must say with a little work the Caymen S is just a touch behind The GT3 on the track. The GT3 has it only slightly on the straights and the Caymen S is better balanced in the turns. Very impressive. Sway bars ,springs, and Hoosiers.

For what it's worth in the latest issue of Evo they test the R on the Bedford Autodrome and it turns a 1:25.5. The GT3 does it in 1:23.3 and the RS in 1:21.9.

remember that whole Ferrari v. Chris Harris episode where fiat corp cognoscenti would control all the variables when it came to prep of car under review?
i smell that porsche corp would do the same thing. not to the same degree, but tell CD and others that they can't shove MPSCs on the CR because getting any sort of published result showing the R competing neck-and-neck with the vaunted Gt3 diametrically opposes everything they've built up for half a century.
way too much risk. perception is reality. maintain the hierarchy. keep the order.

Put a 3.8 in a Cayman R with equal susepnsion and I think it's over for a GT3 on the track.[/QUOTE]
Agreed!
I drove the Cayman R at the Porsche World Roadshow, on the slalom course,
handling was incredible.
