Default Cayman R vs GT3 test in latest C&D

It's the cover story in the July Car & Driver, which I just got today. The GT3 wins 4 out of 5 handling tests, but the Cayman R holds its own despite lesser tires. I don't see the story yet on the C&D Web site, so check out the magazine for details.

I don't understand their conclusions. The Cayman R is great but the GT3 wins 4/5. They deliberately set up the test so the Cayman would have a chance.

I was at Road Atlanta with a fellow that had a brand new stock Cayman R and it was VERY impressive on the track.

Put a set of cups on the Cayman R, results will be much closer.

I feel same way. Not sure how the cover of the mag says GT3 "bloodied" by Cayman R when GT3 won 4 of 5 tests. Also agree, however, that putting Sport Cups on Cayman R would make this a much more interesting and likely more closely contested comparison.

Maybe Excellence will do a proper test between these 2 on a track with Von Overbeek driving both cars. Personally I'd love to see how these 2 cars do on Sebring with it bumby and rough surface.

Put a 3.8 in a Cayman R with equal susepnsion and I think it's over for a GT3 on the track.

the deal with the cayman r is that is a half-way house into gt3 ownership. porsche wants to welcome these customers into the fold. by getting it reviewed and compared to the 'icon' and, by coming close, is-good-enough is the marketing line they want, to hook these would-be porsche buyers who don't wanna buy a base carrera, and can't, as of yet, stretch to a brand-new gt3.

Correct! I guess their point was lower polar moment and that is the only advantage they got from the mid-engine design.

I have been saying it for a long time. The 911 all-in-the-rear design is unique and has strong advantages: superior acceleration traction, braking and others to name two.

And ultimately...who gives a crap what the editors think. Yeah, reading comparisons was cool when I was 15 and couldn't drive a car.

I highly doubt the article will actually influence the purchase decision for anyone who is set on either the Cayman R or GT3. On par with vette vs. porsche comparisons.

The particular editor who wrote the article, Don Sherman, is very knowledgeable. If I'm not mistaken he has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from a good school and worked as a development engineer in the auto industry before beginning his writing career.

He's also no slouch as a driver. His by-line may be unfamiliar to younger readers because he's an old hand. He's been around since Mark Donohue's experiments with Friction Circle theory in the Can Am days.

He's a former editor-in-chief of Car and Driver who got bounced out of the job for his habit of telling the truth about car testing instead of taking the advice of the advertising department. Any poor reflections on Car and Driver in readers' eyes are not because of him.

Or want mid-engine. That's the bogey for me.

I drove an ordinary Cayman, and found the balance to be incredibly sweet. With another 50 hp and mpsc it would definitely give a GTx a run for its money!
