If you're going to keep it for a long time, then all the more reason to get the newer car. Unless of course you can't afford it right now, then you have two choices. Wait and get the car you want, or get the earlier version now. You can't go wrong either way. I prefer the newer one though. Except for the center locks

depends what you want it for. ( I assume we are speaking about non RS)
997.1 has 5 lug wheels, plenty of power and sunroof.
997.2 has center locks, a little more power, bigger brakes and no sunroof.
Both cars have same chassis/tub and suspension points.
bigger is always better (3.6 vs. 3.8), and the newer the model the lower the miles and better warranty... so a .2 is worth 30k if you care about that stuff.
If you don't really care about that stuff and can enjoy the 3.6 power, then save 30k and enjoy a 997.1 (until the new 991 is released.)
if going to keep for next 10 years you may want to step up to the 997.2 as it is the last of the line..... kinda like a 1998 993.

The .2 is worth it if you take it to the track. If not get a '07 997 GT3.
By buying the 3.8RS for $135K I think in my dilusional mind, I hit the sweet spot.
Yet, I would find 50K if someone would give me my money back and get me a 4.0RS

If you don't track, you really won't see much difference except for the mid range torque (if that).
For the street I'd get a .1 RS for looks The performance is great too, but .2 GT3 has it's advantages over .1 for sure.

It's also better looking, is under warranty, better resale. It's not necessarily about being just faster. Spend it if you got it.

Theoretically, I probably could've sprung for a gen 2 which admittedly would have been more awesome.
However, the care and feeding of a GT3 is a pretty good chunk of change. So I deemed it wise to get the Gen 1 and have money for tires, gas, track fees, track insurance, harnesses, cage, and jewelry for my wife to compensate for the purchase.
