Default International Driving Permit Required?

For those that have recently taken trips to Germany/France, and rented a car, is this necessary?
TIA

Nope, not even remotely ... a current US DL is enough to rent

The last time I checked, there were still a dozen or so US states that had not had their Secretaries of State arrange cross-accreditation of driving licences, one of those gotchas, unless it has been cleared up very recently.

From memory, it wasn't just the small states that were on the list

When I first came across this I was taken back to the world of Scott Fitzgerald, Damon Runyon and so on. I hadn't realised that this sort of surrealism still existed!

I'm not! I've lived on "planet America" for the last 23 yrs ... planet earth is some distance away ... if it wasnt for the BBC World News I'd have no idea what was really going on ...

...in case you're flying with UA into Frankfurt, don't rent from Dollar or Thrifty. they're on a different terminal and it's a long way to get to their kiosk. don't ask me how i know haha. rent from Sixt, Europecar, or Hertz if you're flying UA or lufthansa. still a bit of a walk but they're on the same terminal. very expensive to rent a car in germany vs. U.S.

Good point; also Avis have 911's available thru their "prestige" cars for around 199euro per day with 250kms included. Sixt had great packages on M3's last summer with 99euros a day for 7 days ... they dont seem to be renting them
anymore ... despite the rather tasty one they have on display in the rental lobby in FRA T1 right now ...

Also probably worth another flogging of the "dead horse" regarding the exclusion of Nordschleife and any RennSport activities all written in German
(on the Sixt contract) ....
