I think maybe the problem is that if Ford does not act to protect the mark, it will be deemed abandoned or at least unprotected against other infringers. I don't do IP law but that is the general concept. I doubt that Ford is really worried that Ferrari will cannibalize its truck sales but Kia might come out with its own F150 if the door is open.
its rather unfortunate that Ford had to resort to this with Ferrari ... I guess Ford were concerned about the inability of many of their customers to see the irony in such a comparison.
