GT3 Driver has crush on Spyder
I seem to be drawn to the Spyder--alot. I have a 2010 GT3 as a track car, and still drive it on the street, but never had a convertible, and love the thought of a Spyder--like really low-optioned. Has anyone bought one? Driven one? I rode in one with Cass Whitehead on the track (cool). I would of course keep my GT3.

Read the most recent articles in the Excellence magazine. I think it gives a pretty good overview of the Spyder's capabilities. The most current compares the Spyder to the RS, but, I think strikes at the heart of the differences. It depends on what you want...

ˆThat night shot was taken just before a very good meal after a GREAT day at Laguna Seca.
If I think back over the last 5~ years, and even 15~ years, I have to say my favorite factory street Porsches to drive amongst all those I've tried are:
1. CGT (Ruf CTR1 almost ties it, but it's not a "Porsche", so it does not belong here)
2. 996-2 GT3
2. Boxster Spyder
4. 993 Carrera RS/CS
5. 997 GT2
?. 997-2 GT3 RS (like the regular one, have not driven RS...), but I hear such good things from those I trust that I suspect it would be in there.
These were the cars that stood out from an already excellent crowd, cars that I could not get enough seat time, even after 1,000-3,000 miles and 15-hour driving days, cars that I washed more than I needed to, cars that I would pretty much invent reasons to go places in, and cars I knew I could spend the rest of my life getting better in — the first two (and CTR) especially.

All good points. As I said, depends on what the individual driver wants. The two comparisons done by Excellence Mag (Nov 2010 and Feb 2011) really capture the essence of the difference in philosophies between the GT's and the Cayman/Spyder. If you want a more relaxed experience, go with the Cayman/Spyder. If you want a ***** to the wall DRIVING experience, which requires your full attention, go with the GT3 or RS.
At least, that's one humble individual's perspective.

I wonder if there was a problem with the Spyder tested in the April issue of Excellence. The handling described in the report is too weird to accept as standard. And another thing are those Goodyear tires approved by Porsche? It would be great if Excellence would get a factory car for a re-test.

My curiosity is piqued by my friend Tony. I have not gotten my issue in the mail yet and am super curious what was said?
I was driven crazy by terminal understeer (stock) at the limit, on track. And truly nasty Pirelli P Zero tires as delivered simply ripped apart their tread blocks with hard driving.
Much suspension tweaking later (fully solid/custom sways/cup LCA's/aggressive alignment) - it is neutral and wearing MPSC or Trofeo's quite nicely. TC Kline also puts together a very nice 2-way Sachs coilover set-up to fix the understeer and make it more trackable.
But I love tracking it with its mid-engine handling and PDK tranny.
Oh PS on the looks- it has been my experience that motorcyclists seem to really like the Spyder? Thumbs up from a lot of bikers- both Harley and sport bike guys. Not sure what this means...
