Ew That Smell
Weather in Bay Area is beautiful today, summer like. Decided to take the GT3 RS out for a spin. Still breaking it in (only 750 miles), but when I got home, it had a nastier than normal smell--liked burnt popcorn. I popped the lid and when looking at the engine compartment, at the bottom right there was some smoke eminating for maybe 15 seconds and then was gone. I'm assuming the exhaust is heating something up? Any ideas? Just like burnt popcorn, my garage still smells like hell. Thx.

Sounds like maybe rubber melting or something dripping on your hot exhaust... wait until it's all cooled down and take a look. The only other thing I can think of is brutally slipping your clutch to the point it spins and smokes?

I still recall watching a 993tt catch fire @ button willow many years ago after it burst a coolant hose that subsequently dumped coolant onto a hot exhaust can .... Boom
I think it's probably some excess cosomline burning off a hot engine part since the car is so new ... ESP given the burnt popcorn description ... But definitely worth a check of hoses etc ...

I went through the engine from top and bottom as best I could and didn't see any leaks, nor could I find the source. I ran the car again, and there was only a faint smell this time(similar to prior drives). Since I had no frickin' clue what cosmoline is, I had to look it up and it seems like that very well could be the issue. I'll continue to monitor, if it turns out to be something else, I'll report back. Thanks for the schooling.

Maybe a combination of hot exhaust and the catalytic converters getting broken in? I've had cats that give off a rotten egg-like odor as they get broken in. Typically, it's the platinum elements.

Good point it's been a while ... Probably was oil or brake fluid ... Either way there were a bunch of people fire exts in hand running to put the back of the car out ...
My point really was to the OP to investigate properly just in case...
