Default What to buy? GT2, GT3 or GT3RS 997.1 vs 997.2?

Hello, I've been trolling this forum daily and was wondering if I could get some valuable feedback from this enthusiaistic bunch. I want to get a pre-owned track/daily driver and was wondering if anyone has seat time in these cars. I currently own a 993TT and an E39 M5.

I must admit turbo is very different from N/A. I feel my turbo is slow until the turbo kicks in and my M5 is stomp and go. There isn't much GT2 talk here but with 530 hp and 500 torque i'm assuming they are fun? It seems everyone here loves their GT3, RS but the GT2 is rarer and is currently around the same price as an 997.2RS.

So I'm being patient as many cars are becoming available but would like to make up my mind on what to concentrate on what to look for and options.

What should I buy? thanks for the help

go for a slightly used 997.2 GT3RS for around 120k...... last of a great production run.

for 100k you can grab a 997.1RS, but the .2 is the way to go if you want the best of the last.

GT2's are sinking like rocks in terms of price and therefore great deals to be had, however the GT3 is really a great engine and worth having for a weekend track toy.

GT2: Great value given horrific depreciation in the past year. Superb DD and undisputed drag king.

.1GT3RS: Decision largely influenced by price gap to the .2GT3RS. If delta's under $20k I'd go for the newer car for reasons stated by TCS above.

.2GT3RS: Big pricing dislocation these days--take advantage of it if you can.

1) The mechanical purity of the normally aspirated RS is unbeatable IMO. The last of the Mezger motors and the best of them. Something is lost with the turbo.
2) While "faster", the additional power in the GT2 is very rarely of use in a real world situation.
3) I would stretch for the .2 GT3. Better ride, improved chassis dynamics, more power vs .1 and ultimately decent (relative) long term value retention (I think you will maintain most of the price delta vs .1 down the road if you can keep the buy spread in the teens)

Although I chose the GT3.2 to fulfill what I needed, I think the best values are in the GT2s right now, I think it is a different animal altogether. They are available for less than $120K CPO, you cannot beat that value I think.

Keep the 993TT it is a collectible. Sell the M5, it is not one.

Buy a 2007 GT3 for $65k or a 996 GT3 for $45k, make the 993 your daily driver.

Every iteration of the GT3 is faster than the previous, but barely, more of a driver difference than a car difference at a track day.

07 GT3 RS overpriced, it should be at $90k or less, 10 GT3 RS priced right around $110k used (and falling), 996 GT3 is ugly but much more fun than any newer GT3.

Thanks for the opinions so far. 1)Are blue/gold GT3 RS tough to find pre-owned? I haven't seen any at the 120K level. 2)Working on a GT2 but I only want to pay 115-120 for it. 3)Anybody know where I can find a 997.1 GT3 for 65K?

Yes, totally correct. A 996 GT3 is the best value by far out of any of them.
And with the right mods and driver it can be a weapon.
Not to be over looked.

right, but what if you`ll get one that is already out of warranty and engine is on its last leg and it blows - what will happen next to this 'best value' choice?

most 996 gt3 are track rats, it will be a trick to find one now that was not abused. and none of them have CPO.

valid point, always take into consider when you are buying, however there still are street only examples to be had.

the great thing about the GT3, the engines actually can take a lot of miles and punishment.

996 GT3 streets like 996 CUPS can be tore down and built back up.

Yes I have looked at 996 GT3 but I like the look of the 997 GT3 substantially more. ANY nice examples of 997 GT3 for sale around 70K?

you really have to decide on your priorities. if you need a real track car - get gt3 rs, good trailer and hauler to move it around and give up street driving it.

if you want a P-car and want to do 4-5 DE days per season - get a GTS and mod its suspension a bit so it would be well settled on r-comps.

as you already have 993 I would actually strip it down and made a track rat out of it and got nice new 997.2 TT car for street only driving.

996 gt2 car with 40-50K miles has already taken a lot. I was looking this fall at 996 gt3 market but it was very difficult to find a fresh guaranteed non-abused car in $50K budget. so i decided to continue transformation of my 997 c2 into track rat, m96 engine is cheap, with track suspension it is more then enough fun for me and seasonal expenses are way lower than overall hit from gt3 car purchase.

again, it is critical to determine here what are the expectations - if one wants to buy in into club racing and needs to fit certain class, it is one story, if one only wants some recreational fun and does not really care of where car fits - it is an another story, etc.

on this very forum I saw at least 3 great track cars for sale - one rs america, right now for $60K or so 1973 tub with 996 cup car internals, so, there are many options.

I am just really perplexed over posts from folks who want to get a GT3 car as a DD with an intention to 'track' it too. imho after at least couple of seasons you realize that those things do not really intersect, at all.

Quick Reply: What to buy? GT2, GT3 or GT3RS 997.1 vs 997.2?
