Some good info on the tires. As for sizing, I'm creating a list to present to Michelin as to what the Porsche market really needs. Keep em coming.

They seem to grip great in the video, but it is also easy to fool everyone and make it seem better by playing with the tire pressures and alignment.

How are we supposed to know both cars have the same alignment and PSI setup?

Michelin is known for world class reputation.
Their development Partner is Porsche, BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Ferrari, Alpina etc etc.
I am sure those development partner will not want to part of a "fixed" test.
Further more, the performance of those car depend a lot on the tires it came from the factory as standard equipment.
For example, The GT3 RS will not perform as good as it's current statistic if not equipped with the Pilot Sport Cup.
The more appropriate example is Ferrari F599 GTO
which can choose from many different brand and type of tire, but they end up choosing this new Pilot Super Sport.
I am sure Ferrari would not risk their performance figures on their current flagship by choosing an inferior tires for the standard equipment.

Damon,

At a minimum IMHO we need 235/40 and 245/40 18 front & rear 295/30 18 315/30 18 335/30 18 for the 996 GT3/GT2/TT/C4S etc. These sizes are also good for the ZO6. The 997 boys would love a 305/35 or 315/35 18.

Add 275/35 18 Vette/Viper front and E46M3 rear.

Peter

I'm just saying it's so easy to gain better results.

Gaining 5 seconds in a small track like that is amazing! Especially since the new Super Sport will be a street tire. Just seemed unrealistic...

Damon, how about adding the 235/35ZR19 in 87Y (load index) for the Carrera 997's front tire. The above list show this size with a load index of 91Y (for front turbo S). 91Y is too stiff for 2 wheel drive Carrera's front end!

The brand manager for Michelin claimed (when I asked him) that the SS dry grip is equal to that of the SC+ N-spec tires.

If so what is the PS3 role?
They are splitting the role of the replacements; the PS3 will assume the smaller dimension OE role and the Super Sport will assume the role of the higher performance bracket primarily in the 19"-22" range.

N spec Porsche homologated sizes will begin to appear in 2011 as Porsche and Michelin complete the necessary work. Expect to see these on 911s and probably Panamera/Boxster/Cayenne also ...

FYI, the latest word from Michelin on the US release of this tire is May 1. We are trying for sooner. Still no word on initial sizes.
