tell us how you really feel, rad!

I was amused by the list of 911 versions listed on the Porsche website, too many. So, what's the difference between a GTS Cabrio and a Speedster?
===> i can no longer keep all the variations straight. way back in 80's we had 911 turbo, cab, targa and coupe. now we have variation of variations.

Porsche needs to make an all aluminum 911/Boxster/Cayman, these cars keep gaining weight.
====> no no, they need carbon kevlar 911/box/cay

However, the 2010 GT3 and GT3 RS are amazing, and the GT2 RS (or 997.2 GT2 plus powerkit) should get an honorable mention.
===> my guess is it will take a while to have another WOW car after these.

What about doing it like the F50, with a CF center, and bolt-in substructures front and rear?

I have the same belief! Been saying for some time now...

GT1 engine, around 350-360 hp, 8,200 RPM rev limiter, adjustable suspension, light weight construction. Would be a winner in my book!

my friend is building/putting a GT1 4.0 engine (997 GT3 3.6 bored to 4.0 L) and G50 tranny into his already beefed up Cayman S.

Its the one that was in european car magazine last month.

BBI will be building it over the next 6-12 months!

Now that is a CAYMAN!

Link to build if anyone is interested:

I couldn't agree more - that's what a Cayman should be.

The issue (or fun, if you are a hobbyist) is that the car will never be as well engineered/developed/perfected as it would be if the factory (for whom it would be easy) did it. Meanwhile, your friend is eating the entire development cost to function as a Beta-tester.

I've done it before (should every car-person?), but once is enough for me.

That will be one crazy cayman for sure! But it will cost a fortune to get a GT3 engine, upgrade it and also get a tranny for it and install it in the car. That is one expensive project

If they make a 3.4, 3.6L GT1 engine from factory with like 360hp that will be a great balanced car. Not too much crazy power, but will have amazing handling, high revving high end power.

I vote for putting a 996 GT3 engine in it

All questionable naming when one considers the roots and previous applications of each name. Carrera GTS was once either a 904 or an insanely aggressive 924 Turbo. Speedsters used to be simple cars. And R stands for Renn — and the 911R (note there was only one) was no production road car. Then again, we've been down this road before with Boxster S 550, RS60 Boxster, Cayenne GTS, etc.

Me? I'm already thinking of a different kind of Cayman that has an R in its title, one made in Bavaria with a totally new flat-plane V8 and whatever else an enthusiast might want. Or not want.

pete
I'm all for anything with a flat 8.

Naming has gone to the dogs at Porsche -- it's painful to watch.

So are you thinking BMW is going to make a Cayman?
Porsche is in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.

+1 I'll take less weight over more horsepower every time.

It's a slippery slope. More and more it seems like Porsche hired the same yokel that slapped SS and RS insignia on every car that Chevy produced for the last 15 years. And we know how that ended. Let's hope they backbench the marketing idiots and let the skunk-works guys drive product development.

I'm only interested in a Cayman R Speedster S GTS. Porsche has more sub-models that some mfg's entire product lines!

The more focused drivers' cars that come from Porsche, the better.
+1!
