David,
You're taking a slightly different approach than I thought you were when the question was asked. I've been asked the question more than once in recent months, and it usually goes the same place. Because the new shorter ring and pinion is a production piece it can be installed into a non-RS GT3 without changing the auto-x class of the car. So, usually the question is asked from the context of "should I spend $5000 to replace the ring and pinion in my GT3?" I never saw,"I am thinking about selling my GT3 and getting a GT3 RS for auto-x and trying to analyze it" coming.
And just for reference, since I've brought it up, getting the new short r/p for the GT3 RS is currently near impossible. I know one or two guys who have gotten them out of Europe but they are hard to come up with as Porsche hasn't officially released it as a service part yet. I am sure that in a couple of years once they do it will be a popular piece for auto-xers and road racers alike.
Furthermore, our proprietary 8:33 ring and pinion (the one being discussed in the thread CarreraGT linked) is not an option for the auto-x guys because it's a non-stock ratio under the rules and would change the class the car runs in. For guys who run the more open classes, it would be fine, but for the stock classes it's illegal.

I have no intenion of changing he gearing in my GT3. I was just wondering what I was giving up by running a GT3 vs a GT3RS. I already went the route of making a decent street car, my 04 C5Z06, into a "track" only car...no raido a/c etc. And I don't wish to do that again especially no wih a car as freaking beauiful as my Porsche.

David,
On the 315/30R19 A6 the 2007/2008 GT3 RS and GT3, and 2010 GT3 reach 83.9 mph in 2nd gear at 8,400 rpm.
The 2010 GT3 RS with the same 315/30R19 Hoosier reaches 74.4 mph in 2nd gear at 8,400 rpm. However the RS can rev up to 8,500 rpm reaching 75.3 mph.
On the 335/30R18 (shorter tire), all the GT3 reach 82.3 mph except the 2010 RS at 73.8 mph (8500 rpm).

2009+ Cayman S and Boxster S were put in a SCCA stock class and they are not competitive, the class is dominated by the Lotus Elise, C5 Z06 and 996 GT3, all of these better autoX cars, proven at the top level SCCA Solo National Championships.
The 997.1 GT3 instead is not allowed in a stock class because it is perceived as a faster car, too fast for a stock class. I had one, and it was a little better than my 996 GT3. Now the 997.2 GT3 is even better than the 997.1, and the 2010 RS plenty better than the 2010 GT3.
I have years of Traqmate data with the 996 GT3, 07 Cayman S, 07 RS and Scuderia on autocross courses.
By the way, I take my fast driving to the real stuff, so does David, and Peter. I don't like bench racing, is too boring.
