im installing my pagids on the front of the RS. there are little slide in sensors.
what are they? and how important are they?
can they break down from heat over time?

those are the brake pad wear sensors, its a pretty simple design once the pad is worn down to the min acceptable it exposes the sensor which wears away braking the connection and a little light appears on the dashboard viola ... time to install new pads ...
if you do not wish to avail yourself of this you can cheat the system (if for example you use pads that are not equiped with the receipticle for the sensor); or at least I did on my 996.1 by taking the sensors, there is a plastic connector at one end that connects to the car-end of the sensor system, I cut the sensor off from the connector LEAVING about 1/2" of wire on the connector end, I then stripped the insulation from that remaining wire, soldered the two ends together making a circuit and then epoxied over them for insulation and plugged them into the car end thus making a circuit and avoiding the brake wear indicator lighting...

Especially since GT3 pads tend to wear unevenly on track and they can be completely gone at the bottom of the pad while the indicator light still isn't on.
