Default Dymag refurbishment

Since Dymag are no longer in business those of us who have these unique and exotic wheels need to keep them in prime condition.
Refurbishment is not that simple requiring a special tool to be made for dismatling them then the correct materials for carrying out the refurb followed by (I am told) plenty of elbow grease to prepare the CF.
Jasmine who have a big sponsor banner at the top carried out the work and the results are below - tell 'em I sent you

TB, I think you got some of the last ones with the new mag/aluminum compound. I had the new center mag/aluminum compound ones on my 2008 M3, and they were flawless. No air leaks like the ones before. The clear coat did come off near the spokes a little bit about one year later... Amazing wheels though. If they were still in business, I would have a CL version on my .2 GT3. I need to find some used ones, I guess, that fit a 996 GT2

Dymag is defunct? That's a pity. I can't say ripples of shock will spread across the wheel industry, but it's a pity to lose one of the "frontier" vendors. Was it litigation or just revenue troubles? I don't see anything on their USA site.

Does HRE still produce their carbon wheels using the dymag barrels? Forgeline was working on a carbon wheel but it has yet to be released.

I understand it was "revenue troubles" or simply just bad financial management. Apparently when the adminstrators went in they calculated that the list price for the CF wheels was way below real cost...... They did me a quiet season christmas deal on mine and the price I paid was IMO ludicrously low for the technology in these beauties. One could tell when dealing with them that they were a "scatty" bunch on the financial side, seemed like engineers attempting to be businessmen...

They have held up flawlessly to date in daily use, potholes, 200mph, you name it. The feel they give to the steering is totally unique and putting the stock ones back on makes it feel like a different car. The only problem is cosmetically they suffer from road use, I used mine through last winter's ice and salt which started the alloy paint bubbling and of course the constant TC activation of high torque RWD causes the rear wheels to get very hot leading to the lacquer flaking and going white...

I suspect the maintentance will be an ongoing cost on an annual basis but I am in agreement with Stujelly about these wheels....

Jon70 - I think it was the other way round in which case I guess there are no more CF barrels so no more wheels...

Seeing the way carbon fiber shatters so easily on F1 cars, I'm surprised it holds up to the abuse that wheels have to endure.

So what you have is an updated version? I know two owners who broke a wheel in "normal" UK potholes.

I have the later Magnalium alloy not the earlier Magnesium, supposed to be tougher....non CF alloys bend and break in potholes. I know there are lots of doom mongers on these but they seem pretty damn tough and Dymag were a proper wheel manufacturer who had made wheels (specialising in Mg) for decades whose engineering expertise was second to none in this field......

Thanks, I was very close to buy a used set, a couple of years, ago but got scared away after some research and some pictures they sent me. *one involved separation of the wheels and the spokes
Good to know that these work fine. You cant beat losing weight where it counts x3..

The negative market reception originated ten years ago when Dymag wheels were seen "exploding" under motorcycles on the track (usually under brakes during races or race conditions.)

Sooner or later, metal alloys will be replaced by composites and matrix materials. Who'd have seriously contemplated carbon ceramic technology in F1 cars making it to production street cars so quickly? Who would have seriously considered the prospects of Porsche putting out a carbon monocoque production street car prior to circa 2003?

Sometimes tech comes in leaps and bounds, not the usual incremental innovation.

Looking at the thread on carbon ceramic rotors from Motiv, Brembo, et al, I could see these early adopter products being a leap frog to cassette clutch plate brake hubs and regenerative devices for braking and suspension all in one leap forward.

There's no opportunity to move incrementally -- the whole car has to take on the new technology from the chassis to suspension to drive train and power. The 918 is likely (unhappily) a precursor to what we'll have in the showroom in the next decade.
