Default Do I need new brake pads?

I need some good old Rennlist advice.

After a recent DE I noticed a strange sound from my brakes when applied at medium to heavy braking. I had the brake fluid changed to Castrol SRF at the dealer after the DE and asked the mechanices to check on the brake noise. The car seems to stop fine, no pull to either side just a low rubbbing/pulsing noise. The mechanics at the dealership drove the car and said that I had probably glazed the pads and that the noise would go away after use. I cleaned the rotors with alcohol and abraded them with some garnett sandpaper and noticed a slight improvement but the noise is still there. Still not right though.

I removed the pads today and they did look glazed so i roughed them up and reinstalled them. Haven't driven the car yet so we'll see if it works.

When I took the pads off I noticed several hairline cracks on the surface. See pics. The cracks do not go all the way through but my question is?

Do I need to replace them?

They look perfectly normal to me. If the sound is kind of a low moan, mine does it too - it is not a problem.

How thick is the brake pad relative to the backing plate? That is the true way to decide if you need new pads. Anything less than 50% new thickness is best to replace (especially PCCB pads).

Make sure the holes in the rotors are not filled with pad material.

tshih: Pad thickness is not an issue. They are about 2/3- 3/4 of original thickness.

TerryL: a low moan is a perfect description

Bob Rouleau: Check and double check. I cleaned out all of the holes in the rotors.

Thanks to all for your input. Now if someone could just tell me how to remove the pad sensors without cracking them I'd be in good shape. What a PIA they are.

Once you go to track pads, just disconnect them and wire tie them up. No more problem.

Yes, you should not be running street pads for track use.

That is a good picture of the pad surface but, turn the pads on their sides so we can see the metal backing plate thickness vs. the friction material thickness. Also the leading edge tends to wear more than the trailing edge of the pad material. No rivits showing. Pad looks proper..
