Ruf R50
Having celebrated its 40th anniversary as one of the premier Porsche specialists in the world, Ruf Automobiles is turning its attention to creating a car of its own called the Ruf R50. Alois Ruf, who runs the company founded by his father, has created this car as a 50th birthday present to himself. "It is exciting and a big task," Ruf admits, adding, "It is a natural evolution for us to do our own chassis." Using a 700-bhp version of the twin-turbo flat-6 used in the R Turbo, the R50 is a mid-engine supercar with distinctive bodywork that hints at the Porsche engine roots. But Ruf stresses, "The chassis is not a Boxster; it is all-new, built of carbon fiber and aluminum.
It is a true mid-engine car and a definition of what a very sporting Porsche should be." Ruf has shown and tested a mule for the R50 and promises that the finished car will be much more spectacular than revealed in spy shots of the development vehicle. He's expected to launch the R50 at Geneva in 2005.
