Default Track Day - What Do You Wear In Car? Poll

Curious- when you go to a DE, track day, anything non-racing but at speed, what do you wear?

The full shebang? Or a helmet and whatever?

Choose as many from list as reflects your typical set-up.

I think will be an interesting thread!

80% wear gloves, but only 20% wear a fire suit. I am perplexed where the wisdom is here? Anybody care to explain?

Balaclava, sweat touching helmet.
I prefer to run without gloves, but when they make us, no sweaty hands on shifter and steering wheels.

if you are running in cold weather it is fine to run all this safety stuff, but in South Florida without cool suit, the only thing I will put on is my Hans, balaclave and helmet, unless the run group requires, suit, etc.

At DE's, our club requires long pants and long sleeves of cotton based fabric (not more flammable synthetics). The purpose is to provide a bit more protection from fire, without resorting to full nomex. In a normal street car, the threat if fire is generally much less than in a highly modded race car. Many at our events that have a race car, will often simply wear their nomex suits.

IMHO, gloves are a good idea for 2 reasons. The brighter colored gloves make passing signals more visible. Plus, in the rare event there is a fire in the car, protecting your hands gives you greater opportunity to undo belts, open doors, etc. If hands gets burned on a hot surface, they will be much less effective for doing anything else.

If I'm in the race car...full gear no matter what kind of event...the car doesn't know the difference between a de and a race. In a street car, no suit but most everything else.

150%. your could wreck hard at 100mph as easily as you could at 130mpg.
fire is fire.
plus, it will get your head screwed on straight. like when i race my bikes, full gear gives me comfort and security knowing im safe and correct..that lets me push harder. no way i'd go over 6/10ths without full gear. gloves, shoes, fire suit, underlayer nomex, hans.
safety should always be priority#1.

I was driving with a group with fairly loose rules on a hot day and asked if short sleeve ****s were OK. The head of the event said that his advice is to "always dress for the crash".

In retrospect, good advice.

Does anyone have direct knowledge of a Porsche catching fire at a DE as a result of a collision/rollover/agricultural excursion? Street car, not a race car. And let's say not older than model year 1995?

If so, what were the circumstances?

Simply curious... I fully respect and agree with OP points above regarding being safe!

Savyboy an instructor with an older 996 stripper at a Nasa event spilled oil at the track at thill from t10 to t14 and caught on fire(from the looks of it-a goner). It was a hotday so rather then going into a grassy knoll and having a grass fire he opted to find the nearest flagger with the fire extinguisher which was by t14. Nevertheless with that amount of oil I spun at t10 plus 8 others. Mike
