If I remember correctly, not all gears had steel syncros. Maybe it was 3-5... damned memory!

Just a bad shift and probably "turned" the syncro. Not a weakness of the 'box as far as I know.

I imagine you could talk with Paul Guard on top shelf upgrades -- he supplies the hardware, you supply the trans expert to rebuild the box.

I'm pretty sure that was in the X50/GT2 as well. I'll ask James but I think it's the _same_ for the GT3 so you are likely right on that....

Taken from the official Porsche product information guide sent to dealers states 3rd through 5th are steel:

Key features:
• Cable shifting with direct shifting action via a short transmission ratio on the transmission input lever
• Oil spray lubrication with pressure oil feed via oil pump
• Transmission oil cooling via transmission oil/water heat exchanger to ensure adequate durability even under extreme loads
• Steel synchronisation rings for 3rd to 5th gears for more exact gear changing under extreme loads
• Adjustable transmission ratios via exchangeable gearwheels (exclusively for use on the race track)
• Shorter transmission ratios for 2nd to 6th gears in comparison to the 911 GT3 (996)
• Dual mass flywheel
• Clutch operation without power assistance
• Components designed with high reserves of stability for use on transmissions in vehicles with high power requirements

Damned memory isn't so bad after all!

I believe 1st and 2nd are double syncro. I imagine they're brass. Reverse might likely not have synchro on the idler gear (assuming reverse is still an idler off the main input shaft 1st gear.)
Syncromesh is so much stronger these days, but it's still a poor idea to leave the car parked with a gear engaged. It leaves metal to metal contact, it leaves the syncro spring compressed and it really doesn't do much to function as a parking brake other than cause the engine to sit under load. I wonder if people that leave their cars parked in gear have a higher incidence of RMS or IMS failures?

FYI I never left either of my GT3s in gear parked and never had leaks. interesting.

Once a year with the annual service. My dealer refused at first? "it is lifetime".
