This year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche is revealing the updated 997 Porsche GT3 RS.
Manager of High Performance Cars for Porsche, Andreas Preuninger, gave us the opportunity to ride shotgun as he took the first produced 2010 Porsche GT3 RS out for a ride on the Autobahn yesterday evening. Due to traffic, he was only able to get the car up to 292kph (181 mph) on the unrestricted A5 Autobahn.
The second half of the video, Andreas tells us what went into the development process for the new GT3 RS and what the car is capable of doing with the new technology and performance upgrades from the previous generation.

It's almost an answer to my 'feeling' that it has been put together on the cheap as a marketing exercise. I know opinions are divided on the new RS, but that's what it struck me as.

I was impressed by how quickly it was winding up the speedometer at 291 km/h (180 mph!) before traffic (and self preservation) came along .. and note the odometer is only at 2013 miles ... so Porsche is clearly endorsing wide open throttle driving at 1250 miles or less ... so much for break-in periods! : )
As for the comments from the factory guy, Andreas Preuninger, I think he's passionate about the car and maybe overstates the facts a little. A little hyperbole just goes to communicate the sincerity of someone who knows what he's talking about -- not the marketing blather or the media "copy." If there's anything to read between the lines, I think the comment about the car being derived from the Motorsports division of the company is to emphasize that the advances are not visual, they're functional (downforce, weight reduction, suspension, etc.) So I don't see the need to cross-examine the usefulness of 300lb+ of downforce occuring only at speeds (190 mph) that are impossible to achieve on the track let alone the street. And there's no use quibbling over weight numbers (1370 kg full tank ... Cup at 1180 kg ... why he calls that 100 kg, I dunno ... maybe he was compensating for fuel load as he spoke or regurgitating the numbers incorrectly ... I'm sure it will be 3100 lbs curb weight in the US ...) But anyone who's really interested knows those numbers are arbitrary and vary widely.
