Default Lithium Ion Battery Cost ???

Since there is no order guide yet, what do you guess that Porsche will charge the consumer for this hi-tech lightweight gem?

Me thinks $650...

Not that bad, if so.

This was the closest I could find.

The ones from Voltphreaks are in the $1,200-$2,200 range (my favorite is the VPR-S40)

Porsche could easily charge in the same range. They are less than half the weight with same capacity and higher CCA, and longer lasting.

22 lbs removed just from the battery, plus door panels, Ti exhaust, and LWFW, this car will be much lighter than any previous RS has been compared to the standard GT3.

In the supertest article for the gt3 a couple months ago, the lithium battery appeared on the options listing for the blue car that was tested. Its price was 1904 euro... Im guessing about US$1900.... Sure its in German but you can tell whch refers to battery...

The other question is if the 3020 lb curb weight is without A/C and stereo? From the MKI we know A/C delete is a 22 lb weight savings.

It's somewhat irrelevant, as the cars in reality always weigh more than Porsche's published specs. If you look at the German article above, the "as tested" weight of the 2010 GT3 comes to 3,137 pounds and I guess that included the PCCB's and $2k lightweight battery, etc (but did have the heavier turning headlights). And Euro cars are always a bit lighter than US-spec as well...

It will be much harder than it would seem to get a US-Spec RS under 3,000 pounds with only careful ordering of factory options (read impossible without aftermarket help).

I have one of these Rock Racing batteries (Model 1236) and it is better than any big/heavy battery I've ever used. Never needs trickle charging (keeps a charge for many weeks) and has lots of cranking & reserve power. I'd probably be fine with one of their smaller/lighter models too like Model 1228:

It's not the lightest thing out there, but it's affordable and extremely reliable and long-lasting (changed one out at 5 years as a precaution and it's still going strong 3 years after that in another use).

The price listed here in South Africa for the Li battery option is R24,000 ($3k). As we usually pay about 50% more than the US for options, my guess is that it will be around $2k for US cars.

Porsche's published curb weight is presumably for a car with standard options. So ordering the lighter battery, PCCB, a/c and radio delete, lightweight buckets (ROW), and removing the rollcage could take quite a few lbs off the published weight.

Tony from Voltphreaks here. Was refered to this thread. I think eventually, most high end race applications/cars will be using a lithium battery instead of a lead-acid battery. The weight savings can be very significant! Disadvantage of course is cost, though with time that will change.

Just want to mention, that the Voltphreaks battery features a low voltage cutoff, so that you will never be left with a stranded car with a dead battery. The battery that we recommend for most Porsche's is the VPR750, which weighs 5.25 pounds, and contains the low voltage cutoff feature. Before the battery is completely drained, it will automatically disconnect itself, leaving enough power to still start the car a couple of times (in case a sensor or computer is left on, etc).
