"The UK configurator doesn't list that option, however. Don't know why."

UK cars are right hand drive, and larger fuel tank won't fit, so we get smaller tank that fits either LHD or RHD.

did some work on this

major unknown
- part number 997gt3.mk1 90L tank is 997.201.021.90
- part number 997gt3cup 90L tank is 997.201.013.90
- are they the same are they different (how different)

if you source the street 997gt3.mk1 90L tank from europe ($2000) just for the tank (this is beyond crazy)
you will need to get tank
- tank guage (shows fuel level) - this is a common part with the 997.1 997.2 C2 and C2S (approx $240) (997.620.833.00)
- fuel pump - common part with 997.2 and 987.2 (approx $500) (997.620.833.00)

you also need different filler neck (997.201.043.10) ours is (997.201.043.11)
and vent line (997.201.711.90) ours is (997.201.711.00)

there are a few small things as well

summary, there is no way financially to justify this buying all the parts

now, if the 997 cup car tank with everything attached to it can be gimmied to fit and throw no evap codes then $400 + a few hours of labour may work for some

i personally would order a car with a 90L tank but no way it makes sense to retro fit one
- you will also need an additional flange, union nut and sealing ring

That is some nice research there!

Since one cannot order/option for the 90L tank in North America, and to order the 90L tank seperate is way to expensive from the parts department, i am hoping disgarded affordable 90L 997 CUP tanks can be retrofitted in place to serve the purpose.
(the part numbers are different, but the plastic tanks are the same)

Since nobody knows for sure, im taking the plunge on this experiment.
The down side for me is the labour cost if it dosnt work, the upside is the 90L fuel range which is a big plus for my application.

The 90L tank is now in my car, but it hasnt been tested yet.
I will keep everybody posted on the results.

In the 996 variant - I put my 996 Cup tank in my 996 GT2 and it was an easy fit. No installation issues. I presume the 997 would be similar.

JCM
I have a 996 GT2 and the ONLY thing wrong with it is the size of the gas tank. I think I had read that the European tank was replaced with the smaller U.S. tank because they needed room for an emissions canister in the U.S. market.

JCM – when you put the 996 Cup tank in, did you lose the ability to pass DOT emissions testing? Did you lose trunk space? I use my car as a street car and it needs to pass inspection. Thanks for your help.

Anyone have a 996 Cup tank for sale?

my friend -- not a RLer -- has installed one in his 996 GT3

I have a complete 90L cup tank (plastic) that was removed from a cup car and replaced by a fuel cell... I had plans to put it into my former 996 GT3 but then I bought a trailer and some gas jugs so I no longer feel the larger tank is for me...

I paid $500 and would sell it for $500... it is at my mechanic's place so I do not have instant access for pics but PM or email me if interested and I will work something out on pics etc.

Was the tank from a 996 Cup or 997 ?

it was sold to me as "from a 996 cup" but I cannot say 100%

It has been in my tech's rafters for over a year... but I recall him looking at it and saying it should be fine for my 996 gt3...

it does not come with mounting hardware (strap etc)... my tech was planning on fabbing that stuff.

It might take a some doing to get some pics but if anyone is willing to say that it is "sold pending pics" I will make it happen... I think freight was about $80 ground shipping from Texas to Seattle... just as a point of reference... it is a big sucka

Edit: I recall the tank having a 997 part number on it molded into the plastic... but the seller said 996 as at purcahse time I had a 996-3.

Default Cup car tank

I installed the Cup Car tank in my car. Tank included fuel pump, sender and fittings. Installation was a straight bolt in. Issue was recalibrating the fuel gauge. After a couple of efforts (using Porsche computer and software) got it done. The computer appears to "believe" you have a 16 gal. tank until you get down to around 16 gal. Then, the gauge drops accordingly. Part of my testing included (unintentionally) running out of gas right at 370 miles (of spirited driving). On a recent road trip I fueled up at around 500 miles.

In my opinion, a very worthwhile upgrade for very little downside. Entire changeover, including cost of tank (out of Cup Car), under $1,000.

Did you end up successfully calibrating the fuel gauge?
