tire choices for 997 gt3
for track what are you guys running
i have my stock 19's w/ mpsc's 235 and 315's
than i got a set of ccw's 18''
last year i ran a set of toyo's triple 8's 255/35 and 315/30 worked good and lasted 8 days before started to get bad.
than i was using the mpsc's 265/315 great tires i ran thru 2 or three sets and than they discontinued them.lasted about same time as the toyo's.
than last event of the year i went to vir for a 3 day event and i ran the hoosiers 245/35/18 and 315/30/18 wow these are great so i had 12 heat cycles and i've been told that they will start to fall off a may get a couple of more day's.
so i just bought another set of ccw's 18 with another set of hoosiers so i can just swap out at the track as soon as a set sells out.
but dam this is going to be expensive if i have to put down 1400.00 for every five days on track.
40 track days is holy **** 14 x 9=12,600k just for tires and not even mounted.
so what are my other choices and is five track days all that i'm going to get out of the hoosiers?

I don't think you have many choices. Track events are very hard on tires and brakes. Indeed, it is an expensive hobby, but boy is it fun. I am lucky if I can get 5 events on the 888's. My track buddies use other manufacturers tires and they have similar longevity. If you track you gotta pay to play.

5 track days out of Hoosier R6 is a lot, congratulations. You can go slightly slower and get 8 track days out of MPSC, with the advantage you can drive on them to the track.
Run 18", 19" are too expensive.
I got 3,000 miles, (2) half track days, (5) autocrosses on my rear MPSC 325/30R19. They still have good grip, but the thread won't take another 2 track days and I have to run 2 track days this weekend (Las Vegas).
You should try the Toyo RA-1 (if you can find it). 245/305 on 18". They last longer than anything else I have tried. I got 8,000 miles out of one set, with multiple autocrosses and 3 track days in my 2004 GT3.

WHAT? The 265's were discontinued? Damn. I'm down to my last two pair!
I'd look at maybe R888's, but I don't think durability is their forte. 'fraid to say, if you get in a lot of sessions and you get three weekends out of a set of rears, you're really doing okay. Depending upon wear patterns, you might find some careful pressure management will increase tread life around the sidewalls (nothing going to save you if you're really using the car, the rears are going to eat up.)
ps. "than" compares, and "then" indicates sequence. "I'd rather ride than walk." and "Open the beer, then drink the beer." I'm demonstrating at least once of these examples right now! : )

Nitto and Toyo are most economical options and very similar tires overall
hoosiers @ 280 for fronts and 320 for rears seem cheap but they wear out fairly quickly
MPSC and Pirelli Corsas are just too expensive (320-550 a tire) to justify shredding them at the track more than once a month, I've gone through at least 6 or 7 sets of tires in 12 months in my RS...and that's only 7800 miles or so. Lots of tracking!

What's up Stuart?
Haven't seen you since last summer. I guess that track season is almost upon us
again. Hope to see you at the Glen and NJMP.
I've been consistently getting 24-28 HC's out of the 19" Hoosier R6 tire. Like clock work they cord between 24 and 28 HC's. The last set I had a Thunderbolt were "sparking" at 24 HC's. Essentially, they wear out after 24 thirty minute run groups. For average DE's - that's 4 days. 5 days would be pushing things. Grip holds on until 20 runs. Then they predictably give more slip.
I have a new pair of real rear MPSC's 315/30/18 if you are interested. Just PM me and let me know.

so back to the main topic tires 20 heat cycles push to 24-28 now were talking at 20/ 5 days 24/6 days 28/7 days.
so if i split and hit the middle i should be ok for 6 days? consistently sounds good. i did 3 days at vir last nov on my 1st set of hoosiers and i leaving to go back to vir next month for another 3 day event and if they last the three day weekend i be very happy.i'm getting another set of ccw's with hoosiers delivered next week to swap out if needed.
thanks and I'll talk to you about the cups.
so where and when will you be on track?

I don't think that you'll finish another 3 day weekend with the Hoosiers. They'll probably cord. Also, be mindful of your camber setting. I'm at 2.8-2.9 F and 2.3-2.4 R. I find that these settings allow for completely even wear in the rear. In the front I'm getting metal cords on the inside edges. Anymore camber in the front and I don't think that I'd get 24 HC's.
I'm going to try and get to zone 2 VIR. It'll be my first time there so you'll have to take pity on me. I'm going to a lot of NJMP with metro / schattenbaum / and tracktime4cars. If NNJR loosens the work assignments I'll see you at some of those events as well.
Let me know about the Sport cups. They are brand new. I had them mounted on my CCW's at the end of last season so I'd be ready to go. I could easily take them off the rims and send them to you. I paid $500 for the set last year. $400 and they're yours.
