I don't know what you boys are talkin' 'bout any more but as for the R8;
CJ hit most of it right on the head...underpowered and a bit too generic...however I'll say this, it's a great first attempt at an "Audi" sportscar.
Also CJ's opinion is a bit muddy; he's looking for a mid-engine GT3 but went and test drove an all wheel drive, daily driver more akin the C4S than a GT3 hence he describes it as such.
Audi, like Porsche, didn't build "their GT3" from the out set but rather built the base model from which all others will derive from.
CJ,
Great write up...and very good analysis of what the R8 is like.
Like most of you I can't wait to see what the R10 will be like...

well the good thing about AWD is most good shops can find a way to delete the front wheel drive at a weight savings of a few 100 lbs! if an audi "cup car" in RWD was available at the price point of a gt3 cup car, that'd be a harder choice. problem is, the FIA GT3 Audi is probably going to cost 250k euros or more.
the real sad thing is that the typical "sports car" du jour is now pushing at least 3500 lbs...I remember just a few years ago how easy it was to get cars under 3000...and I'm a lot younger than you other guys who've driven 2500 lb sports cars.

if I did, it will start a flame war... basically for a reliable race car- either get a spec boxster or a mx5 cup car. both will teach you a lot and make you faster in other cars.

I've had an R8 for a daily driver for a couple of months. I have no contest with anything written. At msrp it's a nice round town car. Needs more power and edge, can be a little bland.
People need to remember it was designed to compete with the 911 C2S. I'd say it does a good job there. I'll keep it until the R10 is available.
It's a good car in the rain too.
