Default 993 last air cooled 911-- NOT!

In Saturdays ALMS race at Lime Rock one of the 997 GT3 RSR broke a radiator and raced the last 30 minutes with no water. If you think about it- the case is the same and they modified the head for better heat dissapation and kept the oil capacity the same. I think alot of the aircooling capacity of the motor is still there. Its a testament to the strength of this 964 series flat 6 motor. Obviously without the oil coolers up front a water cooled flat 6 is not going to be as efficient without water but still- to go 30 minutes at race pace with no water is quite a feat.

Paul,

I'm going to drain the 20 lbs of coolant in my car and probably remove the radiators for further weight reduction. If the car is good for 30 minutes at race pace, then it should be good for two hot laps and AutoX.

Speaking of coolant...anyone drained the coolant and simply added water (and maybe mix in some sort of lubicant). Water is much more efficient than the 50/50 mix and if you're lucky to be in a region where it never freezes over, that would be ideal.

Ever hear of boiling point elevation?

An amazing feat indeed!!! The Flying Lizard Motorsports car, driven by Joerg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek, actually finished 1st in GT2---their first win of the year. Evidently, van Overbeek hit the rear of a prototype with 10 minutes to go damaging the radiator. They made the call to stay out and finish even though they were extremely low on fuel as well. See www.lizardms.com for more details.

antifreeze is not allowed by a lot of racing governing bodies. if a car dumps a load of coolant on the track, the risk of spinning out is greater with 50/50 antifreeze than with water as it is more slippery.

i've taken out most of my coolant antifreeze and replaced with water and water wetter. works great on track.

+1

I would rather you take your coolant out (and replace with water or water wetter) before you run on track in front of me!

That is true when comparing with only water. But if you put in water wetter + h20 vs. 50/50, the former acutaly has a higher systemic BTU capacity => better boilover protection (about 10%).

hmmm....to think about it, that 10% probably is not worth the trouble of draining/flushing/replacing the fluids . At least for street only cars. On the track is a different story as pointed out by the above posts.

heh heh

if you want longevity with the valve train, cooler head temps and more power, you need H20.
