I was at Mosport this past week-end with the RS and I must say I really enjoyed the fast sweepers with the NEW alignment, but the tight corners really sucked....understeer has a new meaning for me.

The car was 1 full second slower than my best time in the 996 GT3 and to press that point home there was a very accomplished driver there in his 996GT3 who I could not catch, I could stay with him but not catch.

On the back straight I could not pull him even when in the draft and his car has 75,000kms on it.

He would pull 3-5 car lengths out of the slow corners, but I would gain on the high speed sweepers.
Also top speed was down by almost 15km's at the braking point for #8 at the end of the back straight.

The problem with the car is the extra weight and of course the !@!#$%$%'ing understeer.

The car was also not anywhere as stable under hard, high speed braking but that may be caused by my alignment settings of 10' per side toe in at the rear and 0 at the front.

This is definately a car for high speed sweeping corners where I felt way more confortable keeping my foot planted, corners 1,2,4 and 8 at Mosport compared to the 996 GT3 but the tale of the clock tells it all....the RS is slower than the old 996 GT3, more comfortable to drive in the fast corners but loses it all in the all important corners like #3 and 5A/B.

I feel that there is not enough rebound on the shocks, the bump feels good but the car often porpoises, when it should be rock solid. For the first time I got the feeling that the SPORT setiing was actually better than NORMAL, but the car is still really hard to rotate and ask me about the incredible rate of rear brake wear. 2 events and the rear brakes are toast, whilst the front are hardly used. I checked the disc temps after a hard run and the rears were 150 degrees hotter than the fronts and the rear calipers are already starting to discolour.

I also have a problem with the fuel level sensor....it showed 20kms to MT but I could only put in 43litres, about 10 US gals.
I checked codes and sure enough it shows a code for the fuel level sensor.
That plus the oil leaks and the BIG smoke on start up, I guess the car will be spending the rest of the summer at the dealer being fixed.

Did you have TC off? The reason I ask is that it sounds like TC was causing the rear pad wear. What is the weight of the 996 that you were playing against? It must be a bit lighter to keep in front of you on the straights. That would also explain why you couldn't keep up in the slow corners.

I think the issue with the suspension will get worked out and once you figure out what spring rates to use, your understeer issues should be resolved. Of course the dampers have to go.

BTW, comparing to your 996 GT3 isn't really fair. I'm sure your best time in the 6 was with the car well sorted and you also probably had a very intimate feel for the 6. Of course, time will tell...

I've read a lot of 1/4 mile times from the 997 GT3 and 997 GT3 RS, they all run low 12s, same as the 996 GT3. The extra power plus the extra weight is a wash on straight line.

I wonder how much of that high speed stability is due to the big rear Carbon wing.

My 996 GT3 currently sits at 2,850 lbs (no fuel) on street trim. I just had three sort of drag races at my last track day against 06-07 Z06s, I could not catch them, they could not pull away either, fun stuff.

With some work, the 997 GT3 / GT3 RS can get fixed. Grussell is on the right path.

my TC is always off when i am on track, and i have never triggered it on track once i turn it off. my rear pads (steel rotors) is wearing at same rate as front, which is very different than my experience with 996gt3.

i am on OEM pads.
