Cup Holder Does have uses!
I've be struggling where to mount the display for my data logger. Car is both for street and track so didn't want to tear up the inside. Low and behold the infamous cupholders. Turns out perfect place to mount it. A couple screws and some metal strapping!

nice simple hack for street applications but I would not pass you through a DE tech line w/ it as it has a chance of vibrating off and getting under your feet or your instructor's.
I rec. that you fabricate a proper bracket for your own safety

Leif997 - I'm only going to use it for the track. Here's a pick of the back (I'm going to get better bolt/lockwasher (was just testing to see if actually would work). It's bolted down, so don't think it will rattle off. I will be trying to get it to pass tech. Think this will, now that you can see the back of the mount??...otherwise back to the drawing board. Thx

I did something similar on my 996GT3, same desire to keep it removable for street use. Don't have a picture handy, but I used two pieces of wood to sandwich over and under the cup holder, and passed a 1/4" bolt through the cup holder hole to tighten it all together (plus a few bigger metal washers to spread the load on the wood and used a wing nut so it is easier to tighten by hand). So technically, it's "bolted" in, just the bolt "hole" is as wide as a cup holder, and I used big wood "washers" since the hole was so big...
[Leif997, would that pass tech for you?]
I found a thin piece of wood (~1/8" thick hardwood, some type of finishing trim like stuff that comes in 3-4" wide strips that are ~2' long). The display was attached to the wood piece that sits on top of the cup holder using two small L brackets so the display is perpendicular to the wood. The top piece has to be about as wide as the display, the bottom piece bigger than the cup holder diameter.
On the 996, the cup holder has more of a sculpted top surface, so once I trimmed the right parts of the wood down it fit in flush and wouldn't shift/rotate. You might try to come up with alignment/locating tabs or something to help hold the position when it's mounted since it looks like the 997s are shaped like more of a flat ring.

seriously, the sandwich technique seems like a good idea as it should prevent the unit from swinging closed. I would ditch the wood and try and get some light weight angle aluminum (home depot carries that type of stuff) and triangulate a bracket it with that and the thumb screws (put springs on the bolts to maintain pressure or use nylon lock nuts for a clean, safe and light solution)

Well, maybe there aren't any uses for a cupholder after all. Had a friend fabricate me this instead (from the prior pics, my skills as a fabricator were obviously lacking ).

You guys are trying too hard. Proclip makes a non-intrusive cellphone mount that fixes pretty sturdily. Slap some velcro tape to it and to the back of your hotlap, done.

I like it. seems to have a flange that hangs over the glove box door when closed.
