Bwah ha ha ha haaaaa ... NEVER AGAIN!

Until Porsche changes the way the Tequipment bar mounts (it was designed by monkeys and engineered by hobbits) there's no way anyone should consider it.

I do not think the 997GT3 tub is any different than the 997s one. IF THAT is correct, then I put a 996 techquipment bar in my 997s without any issue whatsoever.

In fact, I believe many have. I had Brandywine do it for me and one guy did it in a few hours. Now they do this fairly often, so...

It's a spring-loaded bitch.

Unless you make some special tools and take extreme measures to ensure a careful install, the design allows the threads in the car to be stripped during installation.

I've done numerous cars and each time it required an hour of hassle just to get it lined up with the tub and avoid damaging the threads in the car.

Conventional bars have a two piece solution where you bolt a foot into the car with no risk of damaging threads in the car, then you bolt the bar to the foot.

The bar should go to strong points in the frame (like the suspension tower) not to the seat belt mounts, which are meant to keep a 300lb person in place, not resist the deformation forces of impact during a rollover of a 3000lb+ car at 100mph.

The bar is also simply too light and thin. Compare it with the weight of a four-point roll bar.

The Tequipment bar is junk. Nice, shiny harness belt bar, but nothing to do with roll over protection. If all you want is a harness bar, it's fine. I guess you plan on crashing "small" at the track.

If you have one in your car, ask the installer to remove one of the bolts securing it to the floor. I'm sure they'll not be cooperative. And when you get it out of your car, check the threads into the car and have them repaired before installing a real bar.

Sorry to be the bearer.

in nov. 2005 a gt3 with a teq. bar rolled over at LRP going uphill (probably 80+ mph). the bar did its job but there are stronger bars out there.

I am going down to Santa Ana on Friday to see the new bar at GMG Racing. I am told it can be constructed to fit the 997 GT3 with or without the movable roof wing. http://www.gmgracing.com/porsche_interior.shtml

No affiliation.

Precisely the same situation here: the 996 tequipment bar fits my 997S perfectly. Everything bolts up nicely. It helps to have some straps to "squeeze" the bar into place.

I'd figure the 996 tequip bar will fit any narrowbody 997 just fine; the RS/Turbo/C4 may have different interior dimensions, I'm not sure.

What was your impression of the quality of the bar? I was protection but I also don't want to make a bad decision. I plan to use the car for 4-5 DEs a year.

Default 997 & 996 Tequipment roll bar

Both the 997 bar and 996 bar fit the 997 GT3.
I have the 997 bar in my 997 GT3 and have two friends who put their 996 bar in their new 997GT3's.
The 997GT3RS bar is not bolt like the above. The upper rear attach to the upper shock mounts and the bars that mount rear of each front seat next to the door sill require bolts through the floor with a plate. Same for the front piece if you instal that.

No affiliation.

By way of followup, Fabryce at GMG took me back into the shop and showed me the new bar installed in a customer 997S. The craftsmanship and attention to detail on the bar and the installation itself were flawless. GMG Racing has a beautiful new shop, across the street from Porsche Motorsport, and I was very impressed with the whole operation. Fabryce was very patient and answered all of my questions.

I can't wait for my GT3 to arrive - I will definitely install a GMG roll bar.
