You don't have to hang around a pro driver and the crew chief long to respect the fact a race car is capable of communicating a 1/2lb variance -- and a driver can consistently recognise it.

I liken it to the owner of a car being able to hear a noise that others can't simply because they haven't learned all the other, usually louder and more obvious noises.
