At some point I'm going to have to replace the windshield on my 997 GT3. Anyone have any experience having this done? I'm not sure if just calling Safelite is the thing to do. I would definitely want to replace it with Saint-Gobain, is this something I would need to have the Porsche dealership do?

Just a general windshield replacement warning, I’ve had issues on other cars with them cutting into the paint and causing rust around the windshield. This isn’t fun. Whoever you use make sure they’re careful and you get plenty of recommendations.
If it was my car I’d probably drop it off at the dealer. That way, if they mess something up, they at least have the deep pockets to fix it. I’d probably be particular enough to want to see after they removed the old windshield to confirm they didn’t scratch up the surface.

Theres a member, Jim, @Own Goal who used to hang out in the off topic area. Really nice guy, used to own glass fabrication and distribution company in DFW, he's retired now and drives a 997. He will probably know someone good.
I'm not saying Satellite isn't, but when I did auto glass in the 80s' and 90's, they did not have a good reputation .
Just make sure u use OEM glass as best as you can. The import stuff is wavy and ****ty.......

I don't think too much of Safelite in my area, but do have an incredible contact for a mobile glass guy who is the very best (Seattle area). I'd be wary that the dealership doesn't just farm out to Safelite, so it might be wise to investigate fully before commiting.

Since you asked; I don’t keep up with auto glass installers these days, but for a fact no dealership actually does windshield replacements. They sub it out to an auto glass installer that sends their guy and part to the dealership. Goes for foreign and domestic. Back in the 80’s and earlier we had several dealerships as clients when we were into that. You can ask for a brand.

The dealers near me just send customers to Safelite. You can get the OEM glass installed, but you have to call Safelite to let them know you want it versus the Fuyao or Pinkerton (sp?) stuff. I’m about to be on my 4th windshield.

Also, glass repair could be a viable option if it is just a small thing. I consider glass replacement as the last option. Too many things that can go wrong.
