Tires for C&D Lightning Lap at VIR >80 UTQG?
I am planning to enter the Car and Drive Lightning lap even at VIR in May 2023 with my 997.1 GT3.
I want to enter the street car class which requires >80 UTQG treadler rating, but I usually run Pirelli DH take-offs for track days.
What do people recommend for "street" tires? I have 19" and 18" wheels I can use. 9" width fronts and 12" width rear wheels.
I am considering:
Toyo Proxes R888R
YOKOHAMA ADVAN A052
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT CUP 2
Are there any options I am missing?
Thank you in advance.

Are you limited to OE sizing?

By most accounts the A052 is the fastest street tire on the market. In my experience they are great for a few laps and capable of setting very fast times but when you're really working them for a few laps they will get hot and greasy. Not a lot of tread depth so I don't get a lot of life out of them, especially on the rears. I get more life from the Bridgestone RE71RS but the A052 has a slight edge on times. Also consider the Nankang CRS, I have no experience with it personally but they have gotten positive reviews.

Thank you for the reminder about the Nankang. I think the AR-1 with the 100 TW might be a good option.

The 200tw tires are really hard to beat, especially the A052. The running theory is that some of the 200tw tires are designed as "cheater tires" for 200tw classes (autox, WRL, TT, etc.). For instance the A052 will be much faster than say the hankook RS4, both 200tw, but the RS4 will last much much longer. If you're looking for the fastest street tire it's going to be hard to beat the A052. The bridgestones will be close and I have seen that the new Yokohama AD09 is very close to the A052 and boasts a deeper tread depth. I have a set of the AD09 mounted up but have not gotten them on track yet.
That said, I hear really good things about the Goodyear F1 SC3R (100tw). I do not have any personal experience with those as there is not a good 18" rear size for me unfortunately. That is a tire I would really like to try.

Craina -
Again, thank you for the feedback, I definitely prefer to get advice from someone with a VERY similar car versus whatever the rest of the internet says.
With that said, I will put the A052 at the top of my list until further notice!
Yes, it is a shame the GY F1 SC3R doesn't have a wider 18" for the rear.
Maybe I can consider the 19" version of the F1 SC3R?

If you have a set of 19" wheels I would absolutely consider the Goodyear SC3R.
Also, I feel I should caveat that my tire "testing" is not back to back or always with ideal conditions. I am just simply a guy who goes through a lot of tires and likes to try different flavors.
That said, I am not alone in my findings on the A052.

Where is the "block user" button on this forum???
I am teasing of course, I appreciate your feedback and yes, I have read other positive comments regarding the A052.

I'd run Goodyear SC3R's in 18f/19r stagger. In the front I'd 245/40r18 or 265/35r18 if you're car is setup for it. In the rear 325/30r19. These are quite a bit faster than anything else currently available with > 40tw.

Very interesting idea, what is your reasoning? Is it because the 18" on the front is lighter and shorter?

It really comes down to tire availability for DOT tires. But also, in terms of fitment, it’s pretty ace.
Fronts like anywhere from 25” - 25.5” diameter tires, which sizes are best suited for 18” wheels.
Rears like anywhere from 25.9” - 26.3” diameter which are only really available in 19’s these days. Nitto makes a 305/35, but those are slow by today’s standards.
If you’re setup for it which it sounds like you are since you have both 18” & 19” wheels, I suggest you try it, I think you will not be disappointed.

For the OP, do you have a link to the overview of the C&D event you're planning to attend? I'm familiar with their Lightning Lap of course, but it sounds like this is some version that is open to the public with private and older cars? Is it like a Time Attack or something?
