Coincidentally doing rear bearings on my car as well, mine was a hissing sounds under lateral load but I think additional sound was present too, it was just hidden under the RSS exhaust sound tone. I took the bearings apart and examined them and I can see the wear in the grooves of the races where ***** carry the weight of the car. The car has 50K miles and is 90% street 10% autocross car. I think a 30 - 40K replacement interval for a car driven in such a manner is appropriate, I will not wait until 50K next time around.
