To me, cars aren't good investments but as so many posts above have already stated...they are investments in yourself and the things you love to do. In that way, they are actually priceless as many of my automotive memories are of the highest caliber in my entire life. Sure, there are some other truly significant moments that make up one's life that are more important than cars, but cars also lead us to people...and people are the most important thing in your lives. When cars and people go hand in hand, real magic can happen.
For me, I've always loved cars that end up being very sought after. I don't intend that, meaning they are cars that I'm naturally drawn to...so I don't know any better. It just so happens that the purest, fastest, and rarest types of cars are the kind I like...and the market generally agrees with me. I'd personally rather they all cost $5k, as I'd have 100 cars instead of 5!

Teaser question, I know. For those of you who don't know, we've launched a weekly live Podcast on YouTube. Last night we discussed whether or not cars are (good) investments, and covered the GT3/RS market pretty heavily, including historical pricing on 997 RS from 2007-present compared to other investment vehicles (pun intended).
Regarding overall investment performance, I suspect most people agree there are many other investment opportunities with much better ROI than cars.
BTW - Enjoyed the podcast.

For me, the enjoyment I get from driving my 997.1 GT3 is priceless. I could care less if it depreciate if I put miles on it. If I ever decide to sell it and I get most of my money back, well I could say that it was a successful purchase. Life is too short to be worrying about small things. Get out and drive your GT3s. Your mind will thank you!!!! Happy driving guys.

Cars can be a business, but not an investment — or at least not a good investment. When you factor in insurance, registration, maintenance, storage, etc. I’ve lost on all my P-Cars, even these fancy GT3s. :-)
Tech stocks cost you nothing to hold on to, but then again you can’t carve canyon roads in a tech stock. Pick your poison.

Subjective…
For me it’s just a personal choice of how i categorize the word “invest”…
Category 1 investments are things that reinforce the well-being/stability of the family.
Category 2 investments are positive reinforcements, motivations and rewards for doing a good job at category 1…biking, fishing…GT3 driving etc
Imo putting a GT car in Category 1 it would be too much risk

In purest terms an “investment” is the sacrifice of one asset for an anticipated return of greater value.
Define roi or greater value for you and you have your answer.
Many good points above but I particularly agree with Bwesteve. However, unlike the ‘58 Impala there are some cars that will transcend generations as automotive icons that are on a relatively short list. Many of those cars appear in video games gamers still love and aspire too. Question is whether they will know how to or be able to drive them.
Some cars on that short list imho ( I’m sure you can add some others):
1. Ford GT/GT40
2. Shelby Cobra 289/427
3. Porsche RSs and classic/GT2s/Turbos/some classic air cooled models.
4. CGT
5. Iconic 60s and 70s Muscle cars
6. Iconic Ferraris and Lambos

I'd like to submit # 7 to Waxer's list, and be VERY specific with the exact car. THIS one has indeed been an investment. FIRST it was an investment in creating friends. Check! For sure my buddy Mike (owner of the car) is a great friend.
Ownership TWICE,... and this last time for 8 yrs now. It's time to sell it. I'll be down there (at Mecum, Kissimmee) this Wednesday, and will be with him (hopefully on stage!! so you may see me standing next to him) for the afternoon premier slot on Saturday Jan 15th. I cannot wait, it is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!!! .... lots of speculation that it will break records for a movie car....

Investment on happiness. The ROI on such a metric cannot be expressed quantitatively, only you’ll know the answer!
