New Vendor Intro: Heavy Knobs
#17
Got mine today. Started taking the shifter apart & realized that my alcantera needs cleaning around the top edge (just below the cap). I'd like to do that before I slide the back half back on & wrap it up.
I recall (years ago) seeing threads on this 997 GT sub-forum, on how to delicately clean / scrub the alcantera in order to eliminate how matted down it is, and get it to stand back up.
Anyone have a link to a good thread on cleaning? I searched but could not find a dedicated thread on it,... so it must have been buried in some other thread, and I'm not getting my search words to hit.
TIA

Toothbrush with warm water and some dish soap. Gentle scrub, pat dry the ****. Do that once or twice - let dry. Should be quite a nice difference.

Thanks guys. Will do (although my car was a 10k mileage car when I got it 3 yrs ago, so the shifter is not really that bad,... it is just that I will be entering it into the National PCA Concours out in French Lick Indiana this July, and I want to make the car as perfect as I can.
The Heavy **** brass went in perfectly, and a very easy 10 min job. I decided just to put it back together & wait for the Sonex to arrive, and I'll pop it off for some alcantera cleaning then. But THANKS to you guys, it's one more thing on my Concours prep list!!! .... I actually love prepping the car to that Nth degree. It's my "garage time" and strips away any stresses of the day.
Oh, and I had my Appraisal guy come today to re-do appraisals on my cars.... so we shall see what # he comes up with (for my insurance agreed value purposes).

Also agree on the Sonax Alcantara recommendation. Works great and smells great.
Garage time is also my therapy. Saturday morning in the garage with birds in the background is so relaxing. Maybe a podcast too.

That's a very interesting idea, and I applaud it. I recently received a different type of heavy aftermarket shift **** and can definitely say that it improved my shifts considerably, but of course I had to switch to a different style of shift ****.

@HeavyKnobs do you happen to have any promotional deals in the near future? I am a bit frustrated with the shift **** I have at this point and am interested in trying your solution. Thanks, and I figured I'd post the question in case others were also looking for new shift **** options for their own GT Porsches.

After neverending lockdowns, crappy weather and a torn meniscus I finally got to drive the car with the heavy ***** inserts, been so long at first I had forgotten about them except the shifting felt great and the whole movement felt more substantial and positive, the often referred to rifle bolt action now feels as if it’s been assembled better and well oiled with a nicer feel to the action.
