Does anybody know what the four-digit numbers are that are inscribed by hand inside the front and rear bumpers (see below for a picture of my rear)? I initially thought last four of VIN, but my car is 3262 and I don’t think 3143 is a USA RS. Maybe an internal designator to keep bumper sets together?
looks like somebody wrote something on the inside of your bumper
Agreed. Based on an online photo search, others seem to have similar inscriptions. Here's a link to a picture from a rennlist post, which shows an inscription similar to the inscription inside my front bumper: https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...r-img_1316.jpg
Thanks. The PN stickers are also there/intact on my bumpers. I'm not using these numbers for anything, just wondering why they are there. For what it's worth, I have not seen any pictures of .2s with similar inscriptions (front or rear).
How confident are you that these bumpers are the ones the car came with?
The front bumper has been painted (to correct a slight blemish), but I don't have any reason to believe that the bumpers did not come with the car. No other paintwork on the car, verified by paint meter. That the bumpers may have been taken off of 3143 was my initial reaction, but, as noted by Bxstr above, there is not a .1 RS (of any color) bearing 3143. Hence my question to this group.
They would not inscribe the VIN number but rather the stock number if this was in the hands of a parts recycler, which is when you see model numbers being carved or written with a sharpie. Hard to imagine this was done at the factory.. would make no sense, especially with USA carved along with it.

The inclusion of "USA" suggests to me that it was done overseas--there would be no reason to mark "USA" here. Also, as noted above, this pictured front bumper has a similar marking to the marking on my front bumper: https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...r-img_1316.jpg So there is at least one other example out there of a bumper with a similar marking.
I have been to countless different Mfg facilities over the decades and plants will regularly chalk or write specific info on part allotments to designate a batch of parts allocated for a specific region, model or build sheet. In some cases it's used when a rolling assembly change happens or to idenify a batch of build parts from a particular supplier or simply to identify where the hell they are suppose to be or go within the factory. It could be anything including who assembled what on which assembly line on what build schedule day etc ... It really could be anything.
When I removed my front bumper it had similar numbers and initials on the inside also.... Very common ..

Very helpful, thank you. While it is difficult to find online pictures of the inside of 997.1 GT bumpers, the pictures that I have found support your assessment (that such markings are common).
