This guy has had the chance to drive everything he/anyone has ever dreamt of and probably can still call on anything he wants at drop of a hat. Car “ownership” for this guy has to be different than the average Joe on this site. He doesn’t have to own most anything to experience it. So, I’m guessing ownership just takes on an entirely different definition. If I were him, I’d make it my goal to drive every damn thing ever produced with 4 wheels before I went to my grave and get paid all the way to do it. Then have everyone drool over my top 5 list at any given moment (which seems to change from time to time with him).

that aside, 997.2rs (3.8 or 4.0) have to land on any enthusiast’s top X list unless they have never owned/driven one. It’s a truly incredible 911 and by many measures, one of the best ever.

Nicely said. I would even challenge the guys who have not driven a 997 GT car to keep one off their top drivers cars of all time. When so many folks have so much good to say about something. There’s gotta be substance to the claim

As you guys stated, we're all quite fond of his decision but of course we all agreed. The 997 generation of 911 truly represents PEAK 911 for most of us, and I just don't see that ever changing. Hold onto them if you can!

This was quite a questionable decision. But he did it to save face with Ferrari after they banned him for ripping on the brand controlling the press and "juicing" press cars. Not sure if folks remember this article but he had to dig his way out of the Ferrari hole and seems like his 4.0 was the casualty..

I've always maintained that the 997 is the most beautiful water-cooled 911, and holds its proportions to the original F body the best out of all WC 911designs... Also 997 is the best of both worlds (road & track) so I do agree it will be 'the one', having said that 996 GT3 RS is the 3rd rarest water-cooled Rennsport and the most pure, however not the great all rounder that the 997 is!

Never seen this article that he wrote. I’m not surprised by Ferrari's tactics, more like embarrassed for them. Pretty sure their aero numbers are way out of reality too. Did some highways pulls with a friends 458. We were side by side till I switched to 4th. I would expect something with an extra 100hp to walk my RS. He has more gears and more torque. I do have the weight advantage. The special team being sent out to set the car up for the track was my favorite part. That screams transparency to the consumer

991.2 Touring vs. 997.2 GTE 3.8. They're both winners.

I own both. The 458 is SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER than the 997-2 RS. There is no contest there. I have even graphed the gears, 2nd through 6th are almost identical in size, but the final drive and tire circumference is different which technically makes the 458 gearing even shorter!

...and the .2 3.8RS prices just shot through the roof...

The other tragedy of course is that the more Chris and other car celebrity rave about certain cars, the less those cars are going to be actually driven on the road - kind of defeats the purpose really...

His Jalopnik article really turned me away from Ferrari... a shame that he let go of his 4.0 over it...

My 458 was about even with my Balboni Gallardo in acceleration, always made me wonder!

My RS is lighter than stock. I have no mufflers and wheels 36lbs lighter than the stocks. 458 is faster but not like you describe. Maybe stock vs stock. Just pointing out that the HP difference on paper should have been a bigger gap. If I do the Dundon package I’d be pulling on my friend. Just watched dragtimes do a 1/4 mile race and the time was 11.59 @125mph, that makes it .3 seconds faster than a 997.2 RS. Which aligns with what I experienced in the real world. Porsches 450hp hits like 500 from any other maker

Did your buddy’s 458 have an nfl o-lineman riding shotgun?

I’ll take a 997.2rs all day over a 458 EXCEPT in a straight line.
