Correction, buyers premium is actually 10% on the hammer price which is $165k. Seller got $165k, auction house got $16k, and buyer paid $181k. I misread it, it is 10% buyers premium for cars and 15% for all other items such as motorcycles, memorabilia, jewelry, etc.

Oh that's reasonable. I've seen some other auction houses charging both buyer and seller fee. Ridiculous.

As others have mentioned, market is a bit crazy at the moment. People staying at home, not vacationing want something to do and spend their money on. A car may be a good place to park some cash and get some enjoyment for a couple of years. I don't really know all of the reasons for why it's happening, but as mentioned above, look at the Rolex market, it's happening there too. Stainless Rolex are selling for double over retail in many cases.

I'd also say that cars have went up across the board. 997 GT cars have went up more because they're already $100k+ cars, but if you look at analog BMW M cars, if you look at Audi R8 V10's, they've all increased.

honestly, what else is there to drive, and at what cost? pretty much all cars are a bit spendy these days, and then you get the depreciation hit once you drive it off the lot.

hell, you can easily spend $80K on a new truck, then just go look at other new cars, they just aren't worth it.

even 997.1 C2s are selling today for what they were years ago (with a bunch more miles). tough to even find a 70s era p-car, and then they're spendy too (but they are the perfect size)

Im looking for a car under 200k budget. Something relatively old school (at least 6-7 years old). What do you think about SLS? Any other suggestions?

You're spot on. A new M3 with options is $90k. M2CS, $90k. If you put M2CS keys in front of me and a 997.1 GT3, I know which one I am taking.

A Ram truck is $60k with the Cummins engine and some options. Raptor, $60-70k? with options probably. 997 GT3 has been a dream for me for a long time. Making sacrifices in other areas of my life to get one was well worth it, for me.

Besides the transmission not being the greatest on those along with the issues with the 6.3L engine (some of them being engine failure level issues), described in the following article, they're a good looking car. I don't think it would be as engaging to drive as a 997 GT3 (since it's missing the manual and the higher redline), but I have no experience in one.

https://blog.fcpeuro.com/mercedes-be...-common-issues

If you want an engaging car sub $200k, why not look at a 430 Scud? Or a manual 430 with some miles.

If I was gonna spend under $200k on an exotic car that wasn’t a Porsche I would get a Ferrari 458 Italia.

458 is great too. But it always will have older brother aka speciale that I will want and it will set me back 350k on average.

Also thought about 360cs... nifty car but maintenance is expensive compare to even 458

The SLS felt claustrophobic to me, whereas the 911 is airy and light. The SLS motor pulls as hard as any of its contemporaries, but it moves around more, pitching and rolling. On track you'd see the nose move before you felt the understeer. But it's unique and the doors go up. If you like v8 sound, it has that.

Under 200k, I think I'd go for old air cooled. Either carb or MFI. Those cars have an induction sound that can't be beat. On the more quirky end, I'd build a 3.8 NSX-R clone.

nsx r is surely a unicorn. You should check out nsx r gt... unicorn of unicorn.

I had a chance to drive sls. Very exotic. I think half of its value come from na 6.2 v8 and another half from gullwing door. (Hence thw cheap price for convertible) It felt more exotic than ford gt, which actually felt like an oversized hotwheels in person.

I traded in my stripless speciale plus gtc4lusso for a 800 miles sls black series. Overall speciale is a better car to drive, but sls bs is just more special car in to have and to keep. I will eventually add another speciale when I find my perfect spec.

Any AMG is going to be so comfortable but so HEAVY. It's strange to see it compared to a Challange Stradale. I had a CS and it was great but I don't think it'd want to use it much. The greatest day for me in recent memory was when I sold my last Fcar which was an F430. It was dependable. But it too felt kind of big at the end, and the trans was OK but now is so dated. .

Now truth be told the idea of a 458 trips my trigger. And I think they will be looked at fondly as time goes on. Super modern transmission, good electronics including the suspension, NA engine. Better looking than the 488 at least in my eyes. But I just don't want another Ferrari for the optics to employees and industry people I deal with.

Nobody brought up a Gallardo or Audi V10. Those are so relaxing to drive. Almost refreshing. GT3RS is wake-up time.

that's a healthy budget, for sure! never been in an SLS but I do like them and they're very capable. a bit heavy IIRC and a loooong hood but you'd get used to that I'm sure

I feel you. Ferrari wont be looked kindly to the eyes of employees and customers. Even neighbors.
