I honestly think a similar comparison between the 997.2 and 991.2 GT3 RS's would yield the same result. If you want an RS to go for an exhilarating romp and come back well-exercised, then the 7.2 is the one. Want some creature comforts for a DD? Then the 1.2 would fit the bill.

Man, they just aren’t comparable cars. They are so different, it’s not like comparing two different cuts of steak, it’s like comparing pizza vs burgers.

I certainly love to see our prized 997s given the recognition that they deserve. Most of us here that love these older cars could have newer models and yet choose not to. Nice to see some more folks out there that agree with us.

I got the feeling he was somewhat awe struck by the current value of the 997, he mentions it a few times, I'm thinking this influences his conclusion.

Auto vs manual if just so different as Jrt said comparable in rear badges only.

997 GT2 RS a very physical car to drive fast. He got out of her sweating like a pig. He looked pretty fresh getting out the 991 it was a walk in the park by comparison. Post 997 GT2 he looked like he'd just run a 5 mile run.

Isn't all prior gen gt2's all full dry sump and actually real exhaust pipes vs the latest 991 gt2?

Is there an after mkt exhaust on the 997? I had a 7-2rs and even with a SW bypass, it was really quiet except at idle and really low revs. Maybe it's just microphone placement but there's more engine rev sound in the cabin of the 997 than I ever remember in mine.

Given that, one thing Porsche nailed on the 991-2rs (amongst many things): this is the first water cooled turbo Porsche has produced with good exhaust volume out-of-the-box. Maybe it's not the "prettiest" note; it doesn't sing; but a gt2 finally has an angry note to match its angry performance (vs the vacuum cleaner sound of the prior gt2's).

They are both amazing cars, but like I said, night and day different.

I know the 997-2rs isn’t quite the out-of-control wild beast that the 996’s were. The 997 is much more well behaved, BUT it still was a car that made me sweat when provoked. It REALLY belongs on a track to get it into its fun-zone. That zone is insane. It wasn’t all that inspiring at any street speeds, unless doing something really stupid in it. I had a few of those really stupid moments on street, oddly enough, in Houston. My last drive in it was an early Sunday morning on 610. I came home, looked at my wife and said “that car just goads me to push it and is the first car I’ve owned that is just TOO fast on the street; I’m gonna do something stupid that lands me in jail or wrapped around a street light pole; I’m selling it next week”. And I did

But, I’d kill to have it around COTA one more time.

JR, I hear you talkin'. I've used those exact words - it goads you on", "It's going to bite me in the leg, I know it" etc... but that being said I'm starting to settle in on it. It's like getting comfortable riding a bike for the first time, or hopping up onto a plane when windsurfing. I've come to respect it, responsibly holding off on the throttle until I can get to a safe place to open it up. And good Lord, open up it does. I've even set the speed chime to 50Kms/hr so that in the city I'll shift to 3rd and chill. So far seems to be working. It's like trotting a horse but at some time you have to open him up.

Too bad you sold it. What are you driving now?

997 4.0
cgt
‘69 911e

the first two can similarly goad but not quite as bad as the 7-2rs was, and while the cgt is the worst offender of the three once you really open it up, for some reason, it has lots of different personalities that are fun to explore at very sane speeds; so, less temptation and a very short burst can often be enough. The 4.0 is probably the hardest to keep in check on streets and wants to be on a track. The 69 I can drive it like I stole it without much concern, which is one of the main reasons I have it.
