Default Start up Issue

I have a 7.1 GT3 and am experiencing an intermittent issue on start up. I turn the key and the car will not turnover, try a couple times and it starts fine. New battery and I keep the car on a tender. Has anyone experienced this? Bad sensor somewhere?

Could be your clutch switch.

I am not as familiar with the GT3 as I am with the regular 997's and I know the base , S and 4s models always required the positive cable from the battery to the motor replaced at some point in their lives due to this exact issue.

Before wasting money on a new starter, clean and tighten up connectors. Make sure battery is not on its way out too, of course-

If you have ramps, that's enough room to get down there with a pillow to make yourself comfortable and you can get to the starter, take all the connectors off, clean them and retighten. I have pics of the cable post also, after you remove the battery-
It won't take long and you'll see if it was the problem right away. When I got my car the clutch switch recall had already been done-that may or may not have been the case with yours-

I had the exact same issue a couple years ago on my 2010. It started with one try in 3 nothing would happen but an audible click when i turned the key. It progressed to 1 turn in 10 would engage the starter. I started with replacing the clutch switch to no avail. The starter was replaced next under CPO warranty and that fixed the problem. Good Luck!

If you hear the "click" that means the clutch switch is not the problem. After cleaning all terminals on starter, battery and the cable that goes into the firewall and there still is a problem, then you already have the car up, bottom panels off and all you gotta do is take the starter off and confirm it's bad, which of course could be the case. But typically cars that don't get driven on a daily basis can develop issues, this being one of them. So a weekly drive is a good idea.
Double check that the bolts holding the starter are the same on 997.1 as the 11mm on 997.2 cars, I seem to remember they were torx type(?)
And shop online for a Bosch, dealer prices will roast you.
Bosch starter SR0451N 99660410700, 99660410701, 99660410702
Don't think you can beat rock auto's price, genuine Bosch, new, $232.79

Several possibilities:

Failed to push the key all the way in before turning to start.
Didn't depress the clutch all the way.
Clutch pedal lock-out switch loose on its mounting bracket or defective.
This one happened to me: Shop removed engine to pin the coolant fittings. Upon reinstallation they forgot to cinch down the wire to the starter solenoid. The starter wire eyelet was just vibrating loose on its terminal. So sometimes it would make contact and sometimes it wouldn't. Just bumping the gear shift lever would jiggle the engine enough to make contact again. That one was a head scratcher.

Mine turned out being the starter. I received help from various Rennlisters to help diagnose the issue.
Bought my Bosch starter from Pelican parts, did not want to $1k extra for a cardboard box! Thanks JB911!
I also replaced the negative ground strap at the battery that was a known issue, p/n 997 611 090 00

The ignition switch can also be a potential issue as well. If you are getting the click, it is probably not the clutch switch.

The 997.2 cars starter bolts are an External Torx, E14. That is a surprise if you are not prepared for it.

Thanks for all of the input. I have a service agreement on the car so taking it to the dealer Monday to determine if it’s starter, battery cable or clutch switch. For $100 deductible, I will let Porsche of Nashville figure it out.
