I think Mooty's famous "RS is RS, GT3 is not RS" applies here, and 3 > 4
Now OP, go ask the same question in the GT4 forum and report back.

Any 997 gt series car over any gt series 991 car no questions. I've debated a 991 gt3rs but it wont give me the same excitement and engagement as the 997.

I think most people reading this forum would consider a GT4 capable, but far too "refined".
OP, do you prefer chunky nut butter or smooth / safe / zzzzzzzzzz nut butter?

997RS Period, a GT4 is nowhere close to it. It become very apparent when you drive them back to back, you realize how serious of a machine the 997RS is. The GT4 is very capable and comfortable so you should try them out for yourself and decide, however nothing motorsport about its motor...

I have had all variants of 991.1 and 991.2 GT variants (both manual and PDK GT3), as well as GT4, except for 991.2 GT2, and there is NO QUESTION that the driving experience in a 997 GT (had base 997.2 GT3, now have 997.2 RS) car is hands down much more involving, rewarding, visceral, pleasurable etc etc.
991 GT cars are super capable cars, but my money goes/stays with 997 GT variants all day long and twice on Sunday.
Drive both and see, YMMV

@Red9114me Please post the link to your question that you have posted over on the Cayman GT4 subforum. I want to read their responses!!! (which should be quite humorous)
I was also in the same boat as you several years back. My comparison was with the 2016 GT4, so I absolve myself from comparing to the new 2020 4.0l GT4.
But I still agree with those above, the GT4 was boring compared to the rear engine Mezger. I bought a 997.2 GT3 & have not looked back.

I went back and forth regarding this due to wanting a warranty on track.
I ended up with a 991 GT3 as nothing beats the pinnacle chassis. In the limited seat time I have in the 991 I will probably be back in a 997 in a few years as an additional vehicle.

I had a similar choice to make... I bought a 997.2 GT3. I have Zero regrets, and I love the car more as time goes on. you should ask the same question on the GT4 board and see if their answers are as zealous.

the RS simply because it’s more prestigious to the brand. The value even dictates this. The GT4 will be just another GTS with bigger wings. The heart of the beast is very important to me. Had Porsche put even the smaller 3.6 Motorsport engine it would make the cayman legendary. But they didn’t..... Go ahead and make the mistake of driving a RS👍🏻😆

Mezger. The GT4 is a great car, no doubt, But frankly I think it compares more closely to a decently tuned 997.1 C2S with Power kit, 997.2 C2S (basically same engine, same size, similar weight, better gearing) and Maybe a 997.1 GT3 (non RS).

No contest 991.1 GT3.
981 GT4 was a very well balanced car out of the box that was easier to drive at/around limit compared to 911 GT variants. Car has bad understeer out of the box that can be overcome some with proper alignment. Sound was great, but gearing really kills the fun factor of the car on street, not as bad on track. Torque was only really found above 5k rpm and tall gearing creates a situation where you “know’’ the car is going fast from speedo, but there is no big sense of urgency, making the drive a lot less dramatic then it should be. Clutch pedal felt good/solid, shifting mechanism was great, but for daily use, it’s an extremely underwhelming compared to a GT3. 781 variant appears to have same gearing with maybe a little more torque, and more ride refinement, which to me equates to a similar drive, but who knows, I hope I am wrong. However, with each successive generation of GT car, they are getting more numb/less engaging. For the same money I would take a 997 GT3, the fun/emotional factor just isn’t there in spades in the GT4.
The 991.1 GT3 although PDK, and on a revised platform with a longer wheelbase than a 997GT3 has a screamer of an engine up top with good torque down low, thanks to gearing and 7 speed PDK. With a proper alignment, this car will make you a superstar on road and track. Sounds great, feels super stable planted when driving at/around limit. The RWS shortens the wheelbase feel. It’s not as raw as 997, but more raw than 991.2. Engagement factor is ok, but 997 is better. Emotional factor is good, but not as good as 997. The car ”does” a lot for you and covers up mistakes, which is neither good or bad, just is. In isolation it’s a phenomenal car, but if you are into getting the most involved in your driving experience with total immersion (for better and for worse) the 997 wins. GT4 also is a great car, but with options and pricing close to each other, I would buy first 997 GT3 base then 991.1 GT3, and consider the GT4 last. But hey everyone likes different things, I like driving cars that humble me and put me in place. ;-)
