2010 997 gt3 rs coolant temp
Hi, just purchased my 2010 997.2 Gt3 RS recently so i’m pretty new to this car. Drove the car today for just around 10km but there was a little traffic. I noticed that when I was not moving, the coolant temp would go slowly up to the 85-90 mark and move back down again to the 80 mark when the car moves. Is this normal? No leaks on coolant and full service was done just last month. 80 would be around 175 in the US.
thanks

What is oil temp like? And how hot outside? Oh i see. 34c. That’s hot!
normally the water gauge stays dead middle. Unless it is quite warm out. What you describe isn’t too concerning if it was hot outside.
Looks normal.

To give more details. Car has only around 5k miles on it. Drove for just around 20mins on sport mode. Got in a bit of traffic for around 10min 34 degree C outside temp. Coolant temp slowly creeped up from 80 to 90 then slowly creeped backed down to 80 when traffic moved for a bit. Then slowly went back up again to 90 when idle in traffic.
full service done last mnth
coolant tank is full
front radiator fan working
engine fan working
5k milage
anything i should get checked? Or just common on GT RS cars?

Here I'll scare you guys :-) My 997RS is in for annual service, I am not tracking it these days. Had them pull front bumper off (I do that annually) to clean it out.
Remarkably, the radiators and condensers are not leaking at all, even after many, many track days. But, the center radiator and side condensers are pretty trashed. Thats a lot of small bits and rubber in there.
They will all be replaced this time around with new coolant and an AC test/recharge.
Once condensers are off we'll see if the side radiators are in good order. They look pretty good. Back side too, have grill screens back there.
It is very common at this age for the caps on the radiators to start seeping. Mine are not.
Anyway, what you described is normal. If you're worried you can have your shop do a test run of the fans and rear deck fan.

Thanks for the input. The water temp like the rest of my car stays in the middle and never moves. This is my first Gt RS car, so when it slowly creeps up on traffic then move back down again when the car moves nothing to worry about?

I've autocrossed mine several times this summer where the outside temp on the dash was 90 F to 100 F, and the coolant temp never moved from the straight up position (175/180 F) even when idling in grid running the AC so I didn't pass out. I'm not saying you have a "problem" per se, but my gauge is definitely rock solid to the point where i thought it was a "dummy gauge" that reads straight up until the car is overheating.

Same here, the coolant temp gauge always steady once it reaches operating temperature-the oil temp does fluctuate in extreme ambient temps, and in traffic.
Check your coolant cap, maybe get a new one(?) Also, make sure coolant cap is very tight

Mine stays in the exact same position. Straight up to 175 and doesn't move a bit. Almost like it's 'stuck'. This doesn't seem normal to me and I plan on getting it checked out by a tech.

Those of you who haven't seen it move haven't gotten the car hot enough. It will move. I've seen mine move a few times, but only when its very hot out (100+) in traffic with AC or on track.
Keep in mind, the water temps DO move, the gauge just stays until water gets to about 190 then it starts to move.
New front radiator, new condensers, and fully cleaned side radiators, all hoses pressure tested, all good. The the side radiators are basically protected by the condensers.

Mine used to stay dead in the middle. No movement at all. Now it's a C hair above 175 and stays there. I think it's time for a radiator flush and some cleaning of the fins.

If you never resolved this issue, see my thread on change-over valve failure and disc valve:

Also, did you get a check engine light to other warnings on your instrument cluster?
Before I correctly diagnosed this, I thought I might have had bad fuel after following another thread. It wasn't bad fuel, and I diagnosed and repaired the defective vacuum valve, detailed on my link. I also answered your PM and sent you extra details-
