Actually you can still run 245/305 on the 18" just depends on the width and offset of the wheel. We run 18 x 9 w 245 40 18 and 18 x 12 w 305 35 18 on our 997 Narrow Body.
The overall diameter is essentially the same so the overall diameter is not smaller and not resulting in more acceleration. However the weight can be less w 18" wheels and then there is some performance gains.
