New GT4; keep your 997?

I will be getting one. I am looking for an under-warranty car I can run at the track. I am tired of little stuff popping up on my M3 and am dreading the same with my 997.1. I may or may not keep the 997.1 at this point.
I also really would like to go through the full order experience on a new Porsche and do European Delivery.

As a track tool the GT4 is far superior; faster and under warranty with lower costs for about the same price if you don't go crazy with options.
The 997 GT3 is still the more exciting car for hardcore Porsche enthusiasts; Motorsport motor, hydraulic steer, rear engined and more raw overall. Only practical advantage is that it's somewhat cheaper to buy and bring at the bottom of depreciation curve.

Edit: Yes the ring time is 10 seconds faster, but the tires are different, and sections of the track have been improved.

It’s a fantastic low cost to run track car that punches above it’s weight on the road. Probably the best 100k road/track car ever made. If that number fits the bill and you are not hung up on the fact that’s it’s not a 911 than I’d run to the dealer. That said, as others have noted I could name a dozen things it’s simply falls short of compared to a 997 GT3 and RS. It’s simply not as special and they are going to build a million of them. It would be a great second car choice for me to track but I could never replace a 997 Gen GT car with a GT4. I think the car really appeals to a first time Porsche GT car buyer. Porsche nailed that demographic perfectly.

The 997's are keepers for me. I've had a deposit on the 718 Spyder since 2017. Now that it's been revealed, I think I'm going to get my deposit back and start my search for the perfect 987 Boxster S or 997 S Cab to compliment my other 997's.

This is an interesting topic and I can't believe I am in my 40s and still play the "what if...." game, with myself, but couple porsche buddies and brother. My personal opinion on the GT4 is so mixed. First I will admit, I like the car, I like the looks, the performance, the value, etc..... Now that that is out of the way, I am not even sure that the GT4 (1st version) is much of a step up from a 997.2 C2S with aerokit running Cup tires. Size, weight, HP, and overall performance is very very similar. Yes, the marketing was incredible as you could have a Porsche "GT" car for around $100k (I just spec's one for just under $130k). Like the title, the problem is that you can have a 997.2 GT3 in perfect condition for at or below that price. You might be able to get a 997.2 GT3 RS for similar price as a fully spec'd GT4, you can get a 997.1 GT3 for much less, and maybe a 997.1 GT3 RS for around the same price and a 991.1 GT3 would be close in price as well (but only PDK avail). And as mentioned earlier, the performance is really not super far off a 997.2 C2S with a few mods and proper tires. I still really like the GT4, I am just not sure it is really 100% of the "GT" nomenclature given that it doesn't have a proper GT motor. I don't own a 997 GT3, just a 997 C2S, but if I owned any 997 GT3 variant, I wouldn't sell it to buy a GT4. But thats just me playing the "what if game".
BTW, I must admit, the 997.2 GT3 RS is my favorite Porsche ever, so I am biased

the is very relevant because the GT4 is actually very similar is size, weight, horsepower, price and over all performance. Let’s not forget that the original GT4 has the same basic engine format as the 997.2 C2S (are you really going to far as to say that because the GT4 is more modern, that it is an obvious choice when choosing between that and a 997.2 gt3? How about a gt3 RS? What about gt3 RS 4.0? When does it not become an obvious choice? Not sure why people take these discussions so personal as me and a few people close to me that all have Porsche’s often have these discussions. In fact just today a text conversation went like this....”so for the money do you take this (with a link to this site with the beautiful Guards red 997.2 gt3 listed at $112k) or a fully loaded GT4 or a 911t?” So no matter what side of the argument you sit on, it is a fun hypothetical, And so we discuss.
If this something that is a waste of your time, why even bother to open this thread?

I agree. This whole website is for pontificating with other like minded individuals. Personally, I would rather have the older GT3. I do understand why someone would pick the new Cayman though. I am getting a new Spyder, but luckily I can keep my other cars. Spyder mainly for wife.

I'm sure it will be a capable car, but it cannot replace the iconic 911 shape and the technology is so numbing (IMO)
my MY16 GT4 only lasted 40 miles for me - it was capable but didn't seem as fast, didn't sound as good, steering felt numb (and large) and was just to high-tech FOR ME

oh I heard some
say gt4 lighter clutch to live day to day. porsche has not made a car with heacy clutch since 356. actually 356 has easy clutch too. if one finds gt3 clutch heavy...

one reason i dislike 991rs and gt4 was the clutch being way too light.
