So, if info I've found online is accurate, some 2005 997s had the small IMS bearing, and some had the large, with the changeover occurring sometime early in the 2005 calendar year.
Question - can the type of IMS installed be determined from a visual inspection?

As I understand, the serial number of the engine or the VIN can determine this, but not positive. One thing I mention to owners who are considering this is that on my 2000 C2, we changed it out with the LN kit, and the removed bearing was in perfect condition after 65K miles. For what it's worth.

Is it possible to tell with just a visual inspection?

I have no way to validate the statement below, but as far as I know it is credible
------------------------------------------------------------------------
To confirm which bearing is in the car, look at the engine for the serial number to verify. It is located on the bottom of the engine (flat squarish block/case) on the side facing inner driver-side rear wheel (laser dot stamped).
Engine (3.6) number up to M96/05 69507475 has the smaller IMS bearing and Engine number from M96/05 69507476 has the larger revised IMS.
Engine (3.8) number up to M97/01 68509790 has the older IMS bearing and Engine number from M97/01 68509791 has the larger revised IMS.
As noted, the smaller IMS bearing can be replaced, this requires removing the transmission in order to get access to the bearing. The flange uses a 13mm center nut. Although people swear they exist, when I was looking, I never found an ’05 with the larger bearing.
